St. Norbert College (SNC), a nationally ranked, private, Catholic, liberal arts college, is seeking a Prep Cook. This position provides direct culinary support to chefs by executing recipes, assisting with catering service orders, and providing Marketplace station meal service. This may include the preparation and service of omelet and wellness cook-to-order stations, assisting the bakery and salad departments, and preparing menu items for daily meal plan service and catering.

The hours for the position are Monday-Friday, 7:00 am to 3:00 pm. This position is also required to work every 6th weekend.

Specific responsibilities:

  • Responsible for a specialized area of production as including but not limited to: complete setup, daily stocking and execution of cook to order Wellness and Omelet stations within Ruths Marketplace; and, assisting in the bakery; general ingredient prep; slicing deli meats & cheeses; cutting produce in salad department support; assisting in Cost Management with stocking and inventory duties; Our 7 prep cooks positions each have a primary focus in an area as defined by a supervisor, but are trained to overlap and cover all areas of support for Ruths Marketplace.

  • Attend daily staff huddles and staff in-services. This includes attending Allertrain, Serve Safe, Emergency Action Plans, Business & Finance Updates, etc.

  • Wash pots and pans, clean griddles, clean deep fryers, and perform daily sanitation duties in accordance with local regulatory guidelines. This includes deep cleaning of equipment and kitchen areas during the non-academic times of year.

  • Support the work of the chefs, salad department supervisor or bakery supervisor by assisting in preparing recipe ingredients in advance of meals following standardized recipes and procedures (40-50 different recipes daily) which includes meal plans, summer conference business and catering.

  • Support in the preparation of all catering food and execution of catering functions as determined by a supervisor.

Supervision Exercised Over:

  • 1-2 Student Marketplace Workers

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent

  • 1-2 years of experience as a line cook and prior work in a high-volume food service setting are preferred.

  • Food Service Sanitation Certification or ability to obtain on the job

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to interact professionally with coworkers and customers, particularly in conflict situations.

  • Ability to resolve customer service issues.

  • Ability to multitask, meet specific deadlines, and prioritize tasks and assignments.

  • Skilled in basic math computations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

  • Ability to exercise good judgment and expeditiously make decisions.

  • Skilled at setting a good example for others.

  • Ability to concentrate and focus in a noisy environment.
