JOB SUMMARY:

The Groundskeeper/Custodian performs service work on District school grounds. Duties include mowing and fertilizing grounds, snow removal, maintenance and minor repair of irrigation and sprinkler systems, and playground and athletic equipment. This classification also performs the duties of Custodian, as assigned, including routine custodial, maintenance, cleaning, and grounds-keeping tasks in school buildings and grounds. An employee in this class may be assigned to other maintenance duties in the District. The principal duties of this class are performed outdoors and in a public school building environment and include use of electrically powered cleaning equipment and cleaning substances that may involve related hazards and includes working in adverse weather conditions and hazards involving the use of power tools and equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Valid Idaho driver's license.

Knowledge of:

Methods, materials, tools and standard practices regarding grounds maintenance, lawn care, cultivation of grass, trees, and flowers, and snow removal;

Methods, materials, tools and standard practices of cleaning and maintaining public buildings;

Preparation, use, and disposal of chemical cleaning agents;

Appropriate use of cleaning agent for varied surface types;

Federal (OSHA) regulations and District policies regarding safe work practices relating to use of power tools, heavy equipment, and hazardous chemicals.

Ability to:

Operate power equipment, including but not limited to, grounds-keeping equipment, mowers, tractors, and related equipment;

Operate hand tools;

Operate, maintain and perform minor repairs to powered custodial equipment including, but not limited to, vacuums, strippers, waxes, buffers, shampoo cleaners, extractors, and power washers;

Operate hand cleaning equipment including, but not limited to, brooms, dust and wet mops, dust pans, and dusters;

Operate hand and power tools;

Operate a personal computer using program applications appropriate to assigned duties;

Operate a motor vehicle.

LICENSE REQUIREMENT:

Possession of a valid Idaho Motor Vehicle Operator's License.

Insurability by the District's liability insurance carrier.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: includes the following or other duties as assigned by the Superintendent, Board, or designee:

Performs general grounds maintenance, including mowing, trimming, weeding, and application of herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers;

Performs snow removal from sidewalks, walkways, playgrounds, parking lots, and other areas;

Assists with scheduled maintenance, repair, and installation work on irrigation systems;

Prepares and maintains gardens, trees and shrubs, playground playing surfaces, and other planting areas;

Performs light maintenance on motorized and mechanized maintenance and grounds-keeping equipment;

Substitute for school custodians;

Sweep and mops floor, including restrooms, classrooms, hallways, offices, multi-purpose rooms, cafeterias and food preparation areas, science and computer labs, art rooms, music classrooms, meeting rooms, and related rooms;

Vacuums carpeted floors; strips and waxes floors and shampoos carpets on regular maintenance schedule;

Dusts and wipes off surfaces, including chalkboards and whiteboards;

Cleans and sanitizes restroom areas, including toilets, sinks, mirrors, privacy dividers, walls and floors;

Maintains supply levels in restrooms, including toilet paper, paper towels, and soap;

Washes walls, windows and surface areas;

Empties and cleans trash containers, including transporting bagged waste to outside trash receptacles;

Cleans and polishes mirrors, wood, and other special reflective and decorative surfaces;

Cleans spills, spot cleans carpets, and removes graffiti as needed;

Cleans and maintains custodial equipment;

Assists in moving and setting up furniture and equipment;

Unloads supplies, paper stocks, books, and inventory items;

Maintains work orders, maintenance, and inspection records and documentation;

Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with District policies, procedures, and safety practices;

Performs other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position classification must perform in carrying out essential job functions. (Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable a person with a disability to perform the essential functions.)

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to communicate effectively on the telephone and in person and discern warning and safety alarms such as vehicle backup alarms; comprehend written instructions and work orders; move over rough, uneven terrain and move through unfamiliar buildings and rooms; operate a motor vehicle, grounds-keeping and custodial equipment, heavy equipment, and to operate a variety of power and hand tools and to make adjustments to equipment; lift or move 70 pounds regularly and 100 pounds occasionally; maneuver power cleaning equipment such as vacuums and scrubbers, stand for up to four hours, and move between work stations and job tasks on a single shift. Jobs in this class require performing repetitive hand movement in gripping, and hand/wrist/arm movements. Related job tasks may require, with or without reasonable accommodation, walking, standing, sitting, lifting, stooping, squatting, kneeling, bending, crouching, pushing, grasping, and reaching; working in confined spaces or on ladders; and working in an outdoor environment.

EVALUATION:

Performance of this position will be evaluated by the Maintenance Supervisor in accordance with the Board's policy on evaluation of classified employees.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:

All classified employees of the Minidoka County School District #331, including those in this position, are at will employees, meaning employment may be terminated by either the employer or employee at any time for any reason, consistent with applicable state or federal law. This job description/classification specification does not constitute an employment agreement and is subject to change as the needs of the District and position requirements evolve. Employment is contingent upon Board approval, successful completion of a federal background check, and a pre-employment drug-free workplace screen.
