Duties
- Receives, stores, releases, inventories, controls, disposes of, and maintains custody of a wide variety of property and evidence seized by police officers.
- Examines each item for proper packaging and documentation and accepts or rejects said item.
- Serves as liaison for evidence and property matters between the City, general public and other local, state, and federal agencies.
- Initiates inquiries on property and evidence to obtain information on ownership for possible release and disposition; disposes of property and evidence in accordance with state law.
- Stays current with federal, state, and local legal precedents and court decisions pertaining to property and evidence issues.
- Assists in conducting audits and inventories for accountability and accreditation purposes.
- Assists with other tasks such as transporting property and obtaining forms as requested.
- Performs other related work as required.
Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics
Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS- High school diploma or GED. Three (3) or more years experience in law enforcement property/evidence custody, police records management, and dispatch communications or an equivalent combination of education, certification, training and/or experience.
- Must have National Incident Management System (NIMS) certification (levels to be determined by job classification requirements). Must have Federal Crime Information Center (FCIC)/National Crime Information Center (NCIC) certification. Must have a valid Florida drivers license and satisfactory driving record throughout employment.
- Knowledge of relevant regulations and laws pertaining to property, evidence, and chain of custody processes.
- Knowledge of legal and police procedures and ability to apply that knowledge in handling assigned incidents.
- Knowledge of legal processes associated with the maintenance of public records and documents.
- Skill in working independently and following through with assignments with minimal supervision.
- Ability to operate a computer using Microsoft Office products (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel) and applicable organizational software.
- Ability to adjust and adapt program areas and operations under charge to new/changing situations resulting from new laws, decisions, or circumstances.
- Ability to articulate, demonstrate and train others concerning current laws, standards, policies, and procedures.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Ability to regularly attend work and arrive punctually for designated work schedule
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain confidentiality regarding critical and sensitive information, records, and reports.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Ability to deal effectively and courteously with the public.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities to ensure that deadlines are met.
- Depending on functional area of assignment, tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort usually involving some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (up to 20 pounds). Usually involves some climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, walking, or standing.
- Tasks are regularly performed inside without exposure to adverse environmental conditions (e.g., dirt, cold, rain, fumes).
- Some tasks require manual dexterity, in addition to visual and hearing acuity. Some tasks may involve identifying and distinguishing colors. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally and in writing.
