JOB SUMMARY
This position participates in the maintenance and repair of city streets, grounds, and related infrastructure
MAJOR DUTIES
- Maintains landscaping; mows grass and cuts weeds; rakes and blows leaves; cuts and lays sod; prunes trees and shrubs; applies herbicides.
- Installs and repairs fencing.
- Applies sand and deicer on walkways and parking areas; apprise brine and sand on roadways.
- Installs, maintains, and adjusts irrigation systems.
- Inspects equipment and vehicle for operability and safety.
- Operates a variety of equipment in the maintenance of the right-of-way.
- Drives a pickup truck and operates zero-turn-mowers, weedeaters, chainsaws, edgers, and blowers.
- Picks up trash and debris from roadway; clears creeks; unstops catch basins; cleans out curbs and gutters.
- Flags traffic at work sites; sets out warning signs, barricades, etc.
- Assists with repairs to streets, service cuts, curbs, and gutters; lays brick; removes old concrete to landfill.
- Replaces mailboxes, plants, and shrubs; installs sod or sew and straw at city projects.
- Assists sanitation crews in the collection of yard debris.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
- Knowledge of street construction and maintenance materials, methods, and standards.
- Knowledge of grounds and landscape maintenance principles.
- Knowledge of hand and power tools.
- Knowledge of irrigation system maintenance and repair.
- Skill in the operation of assigned vehicles, tools, and equipment.
- Skill in interpersonal relations.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Streets Supervisor assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
- The work consists related maintenance duties. Heavy traffic and inclement weather contribute to the complexity of the position.
- The purpose of this position is to participate in the maintenance of city streets and grounds. Success in this position results in well-maintained and safe roadways.
CONTACTS
- Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city personnel, and members of the general public.
- Contacts are typically to resolve problems and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
- The work is typically performed outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, and occasional cold or inclement weather. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- At least two of related experience required or
- Any equivalent combination of education, experience, training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the work
- Must possess a current, valid Georgia Driver's License.
- Must successfully pass criminal background and Motor Vehicle checks
- Must successfully pass post-offer drug screening and physical.
