We are currently seeking a Tree Maintenance Worker to be a part of our tree crew performing tree maintenance work on parkland across Montgomery County. This position provides the opportunity to obtain a CDL and operate small equipment including chipper and mini-skid steers. Our Tree Maintenance Worker will be a part of an innovative team of tree climbers, tree workers, and arborists dedicated to the safe removal of hazardous trees and maintenance of the tree health in our parks. Examples of Important Duties

Equipment Operation & Maintenance

  • Provides ground support for tree climbers performing tree work including assisting climbers performing rigging operations to support lowering of limbs and trunk sections, chipping brush, and site cleanup.
  • Operates front-end loaders, skid steer, mini-skid steers, and other equipment to move logs and brush during tree removals. Operates equipment in a manner that is safe and keeps the work area secure from unauthorized persons.
  • Operates wood chippers to clean up debris on jobsites.
  • Drives trucks and trailer combinations with a gross vehicle weight rating requiring a CDL.
  • Serves as on-site subject matter expert regarding direction and instruction for proper procedure and safety of equipment operation.

Assists Tree Climber with Removal and Trimming of Trees

  • Utilizes ropes to assist tree climbers to safely lower down the tree by sections.
  • Utilizes rope to raise and lower equipment to tree climbers while aloft.
  • Wears required PPE and ensures climbing equipment including ropes, carabiners, ascenders, pulleys, slings, saddles, and all other hardware is inspected and maintained before each use.

Important Skills and Characteristics

  • Considerable skill in operation of vehicles requiring a CDL license, aerial lift trucks, chainsaws, chippers, hand tools and other specialized tree care equipment
  • Knowledge and/or interest in the Tree Care industry.
  • Excellent customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge in a variety of knots, hitches, and hardware commonly used in the tree care industry is a plus!

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).
  • Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in groundskeeping, building maintenance or park maintenance.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total four (4) years.
  • Valid driver's license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver's license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee's ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required of their position.
  • Pass Commission medical examination.
  • Depending upon the area of assignment, some positions in this class require within 12 months of hire (a) Commercial driver's license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements; (b) obtainment of certifications including:

Working Conditions

Primarily works outside but may work inside on occasion or as assigned. May work weekends, evenings and holidays. Occasionally exposed to inclement weather, dirt, waste, odors, caustic chemicals, pesticides, wildlife and potentially harmful insects (e.g., bees, hornets, wasps) and plants (e.g., poison ivy). Ability to occasionally lift up to 100 pounds and regularly up to 50 pounds
