Job Summary
Under general supervision, the Sanitation Worker I is an entry-level position that performs routine and repetitive physical work collecting solid waste materials from commercial and residential routes. Work involves periodically operating collection equipment. This position is eligible for grade increases based on preferred qualifications.
Essential Functions and Duties
Collects commercial and residential curbside or dumpster refuse; follows daily routes and schedules.
Lifts and dumps refuse cans and other materials in collection vehicles and place cans back in their original position.
Operates motorized vehicles and powered equipment.
Periodically operates small equipment or tools to help transport between departments or assist other departments as instructed by the Supervisor.
Performs pre-route vehicle maintenance checks; maintain, repair and service equipment with the operation of various hand and power tools.
Performs various minor shop and yard duties.
Works safely, follows safe work practices and identifies and reports unsafe work conditions.
Performs other duties as required or assigned.
Typical Qualifications
High school diploma; or any equivalent combination of education or experience.
Valid North Dakota drivers license.
Strong communication skills, both orally and in writing.
Ability to create and maintain effective working relationships with peers, superiors, other City departments and the public.
Preferred Qualifications
Ability to obtain CDL Class B drivers license with endorsements within six months of hire.
Previous experience operating heavy equipment of different types.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move more than 100 pounds with assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions and is regularly exposed to vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and with explosives and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The noise level in the work environment is occasionally loud.

Must have the ability to cross-train and work with other public works departments. Ability to perform 24-hour standby duty for Public Works emergencies for the City of Devils Lake.
The City of Devils Lake maintains a drug and alcohol testing policy to remain compliant with federal regulations; employees nd applicants in this job classification are subject to pre-employment testing, random testing, reasonable suspicion testing, post-accident and follow-up testing when appropriate
