The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a Highway Maintenance Worker 2 (in training) to join our regional maintenance team. Under the guidance of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3, this journey-level position plays a vital role in preserving and maintaining the safety and functionality of Washingtons transportation infrastructure. This position will assist various work groups across the region, performing skilled highway maintenance tasks such as repairing roadways, bridges, and overpasses. Flexibility is essential, as this position may be temporarily assigned to different crews depending on daily operational needs, Safety is at the core of every task you perform.
This role offers the opportunity to lead small crews when needed and provides valuable hands-on experience in the operation of maintenance equipment and performance of a wide range of highway repair activities.
What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you/the Highway Maintenance Worker 2 (in-training) will:
- Set up and remove traffic control devices (signs, cones, barricades) to establish safe work zones.
- Participate in mobile traffic control operations, including serving as a buffer vehicle to protect crews.
- Perform pavement repair and roadway maintenance to ensure safe driving conditions.
- Install and maintain pavement markings using proper layout and application techniques.
- Maintain and repair guardrails, signage, and other roadway safety features.
- Conduct drainage maintenance and repair to prevent flooding and support road stability.
- Remove roadway debris and obstructions to ensure safe and clear travel lanes.
- Load, transport, and unload materials and equipment needed for maintenance tasks.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required :
Highway Maintenance Worker 1 level:
- Washington State Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class B without airbrake restrictions. Must have N (tanker) endorsement and current medical card obtained prior to employment. Must obtain Class A CDL (without restrictions) with endorsement N and without air brakes restriction within 12 months of hiring, WSDOT will assist in training for this licensing requirement.
- One (1) year of experience performing roadway maintenance, roadway construction, heavy equipment operation, over the road or other truck driving, farming, landscaping, general construction, or related experience.
- Basic computer/electronic tablet skills with the ability to communicate, capture, and retrieve information.
- Ability to lift and transport materials and equipment up to 50 pounds.
Highway Maintenance Worker 2 level:
- Washington State Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class B without airbrake restrictions. Must have N (tanker) endorsement and current medical card obtained prior to employment. Must obtain Class A CDL (without restrictions) with endorsement N and without air brakes restriction within 12 months of hiring, WSDOT will assist in training for this licensing requirement.
- Two (2) years of experience performing roadway maintenance, roadway construction, heavy equipment operation, over the road or other truck driving, farming, landscaping, general construction, or related experience.
- Basic computer/electronic tablet skills with the ability to communicate, capture, and retrieve information.
- Ability to lift and transport materials and equipment up to 50 pounds.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
- High school graduation, or possession of a GED certificate
- Washington Class Q CDL with N endorsement without airbrake restrictions
- Experience performing traffic control per MUTCD including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging.

- The salary range listed includes the 3% general wage increase, effective on July 1, 2025.
- In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
