Parks Maintenance Mechanic Assistant

(Anticipated Hiring Range: $18.70 -$19.64/hour)
Positions assigned to this class perform preventative, maintenance and repairs on park related maintenance tools, and equipment. Assists in the organization and maintenance of the shop and equipment yard. Inventory control and supplies delivery and pick up. May assist with major park events and landscape maintenance as needed.

Essential Duties

The following are intended to describe core work functions of this classification. While the level and broad nature of essential duties may not change, specific work tasks may vary over time depending on the Citys needs.

  • Perform semi-skilled and skilled service and maintenance of all minor repair work on park equipment which includes inspecting, diagnosing and correcting all minor mechanical problems.
  • Perform minor repairs on trucks and equipment under the direction of the Parks Maintenance Mechanic.
  • Performs semi-skilled and skilled maintenance of the parks shop, employee lounge, storage buildings and storage yard.
  • Order, pickup and delivery of parts, materials, fuel and equipment related to the shop, maintenance yard and other park facilities as assigned.
  • May assist in maintaining inventory control, monitor and track use and purchase of inventory items. Monitor vehicle mileage and hours.
  • Support the Citys policies, goals and objectives and work with management and other staff to ethically achieve such goals and objectives; ensure compliance with safety procedures.
Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience
Must possess a high school diploma or GED and one (1) year paid experience in the diagnosis, maintenance and repair of minor mechanical issues on vehicles, machinery, small tools and equipment.

  • City and Department procedures, policies and guidelines.
  • Methods, techniques, and the operational characteristics of automotive mechanics, parks equipment and tools.
  • Safety procedures; proper use of equipment, tools and personal protective equipment.

Skills
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with coworkers and other individuals in contact during the course of work; communicating clearly and concisely.
  • Preventative maintenance and repair, operating park maintenance equipment including but not limited to small power tools, mowers, welders, and gators.
  • Assessing, prioritizing and completing multiple tasks and demands simultaneously.
  • Mechanical repair needs and estimate the cost and time of repairs and assist in the maintenance of a variety of shop and repair records.
  • Inventory control and ordering supplies, pickup and delivery of parts and fuel.
  • Creating and maintaining a safe environment; working independently with little or no supervision.

Pre-employment Requirements
Candidates who are selected for appointment may be required to be fingerprinted, if 18 or older; successfully complete a background investigation, employment verification and may be subject to a drug/alcohol test, medical, polygraph and/or psychological evaluation. Candidates who are appointed will be required to possess a valid drivers license to operate a vehicle in Arizona, or meet the transportation needs of the position.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
Work is performed in a shop or out of doors and may involve climbing ladders. Requires moderate exertion and lifting carrying objects up to 100 pounds, repeated bending, stooping. Requires visual and manual dexterity and precision measurements and continuous repetitive arm, hand and eye movement. May be exposed to high voltage and hazardous chemicals. Work schedule which may include nights, weekends, holidays and extended hours during emergencies.
