Job Overview

This position is responsible for the maintenance, preparation, and repair of athletic fields and surrounding grounds to ensure safe, attractive, and high-performing playing surfaces. This role supports all athletic and recreational activities by performing turf care, field lining, equipment upkeep, and general landscape tasks across a variety of outdoor sports facilities.

Job Distinction

Performs skilled work involving maintenance and inspection of athletic fields. Functions as lead workers providing supervision to lower-level employees.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs advanced turf maintenance, including fertilization, pest identification, and chemical application.
  • Develops and manages turf care schedules; tracks and analyzes maintenance results.
  • Runs and troubleshoots irrigation systems; diagnoses issues such as drought stress, broken zones, or faulty nozzles.
  • Completes pesticide application logs.
  • Oversee quality and playability of natural and synthetic sports surfaces.
  • Oversee daily and weekly crew work lists, special projects, and in-house renovation efforts.
  • Supervises and trains grounds crew staff; provides guidance and quality control.
  • Provides oversight to temporary or seasonal workers.
  • Operates, programs, and troubleshoots robotic sports field lining or mowing equipment.
  • Lays out and adjusts field markings for multiple sports using specialized tools.
  • Completes computerized inspections, reports, and maintenance tracking using designated systems.
  • Operates and maintains equipment such as tractors, utility vehicles, field drags, and mowers.
  • Performs routine equipment inspections and minor maintenance.
  • Maintains clean and safe conditions in dugouts, bleachers, and surrounding field areas.
  • Tracks maintenance tasks and material usage using a computerized system.
  • Drives a vehicle to and from work sites as required.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Job Specifications

  • Knowledge of reading and interpretation of plans and specifications.
  • Knowledge of equipment, material and supplies used in building and grounds maintenance and related facilities.
  • Knowledge of turf management and sports field maintenance practices.
  • Knowledge of safe operation of groundskeeping tools and equipment.
  • Skill in the use of hand and electrical tools and equipment used in building and construction, and athletic field grooming equipment.
  • Skill in recognizing an emergency and taking appropriate action.
  • Ability to interpret field diagrams and apply accurate markings.
  • Ability to perform a variety of physical tasks.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to operate basic computer functions (email, digital timecard, data entry, etc.).
  • Ability to work effectively with clients, employees, vendors, patrons, and others.
  • Ability to prioritize work.
  • Ability to plan, organize and supervise the work of others.
  • Ability to prove their own work and work of others.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Physical Requirements

  • The work is performed in an environment where various types of chemicals are used.
  • Required to work outside in all types of weather.
  • Must be able to safely use hand and power tools.
  • Must be able to lift and carry equipment and tools.
  • Required to lift to 50 lbs. and climb up to 35 Feet.

Work Category

  • Medium Work - Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Minimum Qualifications Required

  • Graduation from high school or possession of a GED Certificate; AND
  • Two years of experience in groundskeeping, landscaping, or athletic field maintenance; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide job-related competencies; AND
  • Possession of a valid Florida Driver's License; AND
  • May require a CDL B or A within the probationary period; And
  • May require obtaining Restricted Use Pesticide and Commercial Fertilizer Applicators Licenses within the probationary period.

Special Probationary Note

  • Appointing Authority may extend the probationary period to which the position is assigned.

Emergency Management Responsibilities

In the event of an emergency or disaster, an employee may be required to respond promptly to duties and responsibilities as assigned by the employees department, the Countys Office of Emergency Management, or County Administration. Such assignments may be for before, during or after the emergency/disaster.

  1. Maintain the ability to pass the background checks required for the position. These background checks may include but are not limited to:
  • Criminal History Background Check using Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS)
  • Level 1 and Level 2 Background screening (Ch. 435 Florida Statutes)
  • Child Abuse, Abandonment and Neglect Record Check using the State Automated Child Welfare Information System (SACWIS)
  • Sex Offender and Sexual Predator record check using the list maintained by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE)
  1. Possess the necessary job-related license(s) or certification(s) that may include possession of a Florida Driver License (Class E) or an applicable Commercial Driver License (CDL).

Career Progression

Employees in this classification that acquire the competencies and minimum qualifications for the next tier will be able to apply for promotional opportunities through a competitive selection process. Employees will not automatically be upgraded to the next tier. Reclassifying a position is based on business need and financial impact and is not based solely on the job competencies or qualifications of the incumbent.
