Custodian

The City of Ontario's Public Works Agency has an excellent opportunity for a Custodian to join their dedicated team in making sure that City buildings and facilities are well cleaned and maintained. Under Supervision, the Custodian performs semi-skilled custodial duties replacing supplies and performing modern and efficient janitorial methods and techniques.
The ideal candidate will exhibit excellent service in teamwork, communication, and responsiveness. The successful candidate will be able to work extended hours including evenings, nights, or weekend shifts and possess knowledge and experience in the proper use of appropriate chemical practices as well as have the ability to review and understand written safety precautions. Additionally, the successful candidate will embody the City's mission and vision, as well as the qualities of a "Five Tool Player" - Leader, Thinker, Communicator, Operator and Public Servant - and the City's Customer Service Philosophy - Empathy, Respect, and Problem Solving.
Public Works Agency
The Public Works agency strives to meet the Ontario City Council goal of focusing resources in Ontario's Commercial and Residential Neighborhoods. The agency does this through a comprehensive array of programs, activities, and services completed by Parks and Maintenance, Municipal Services, Integrated Waste, and Design and Construction Departments. These divisions work together to provide essential construction, maintenance and repair services to the citizens and businesses of Ontario. Background Check Requirement
As part of their duties, the Custodian may be assigned to work in the Ontario Police Department facilities. As a result, employment in this position is subject to the satisfactory completion of a background investigation conducted by the Ontario Police Department. This background investigation will include the passing of a polygraph test. Candidates may be disqualified from further consideration during the background investigation for a variety of reasons including but not limited to: an excessive number of traffic citations and/or collisions; arrests and/or convictions; a history of illegal substance abuse; poor credit history (factors include bankruptcy, foreclosures, liens, repossessions, and recency); or thefts from a previous employer. Examples of Essential Functions
The essential functions typically performed by the Custodian include the following, but not limited to:
- Cleans and maintains buildings using applicable equipment, tools, and cleaning agents.
- Cleans and sanitizes restrooms, kitchens and eating areas.
- Stocks restroom facilities with supplies such as soap and paper products; performs minor repairs of dispensers.
- Replaces light bulbs throughout facilities.
- Cleans and maintains equipment; keeps custodian closet organized; inspects work areas and makes routine repairs or reports major maintenance needs.
- Sweeps, mops, vacuums, dusts and cleans offices and other work areas.
- Collects and properly disposes of hazardous and non-hazardous waste.
- Strips, waxes and polishes floors; shampoos and deep-cleans carpets.
- Recycles paper, boxes, and newspapers.
- Completes daily time sheet, work order requests and supply forms.
Qualification Guidelines
Education
High school diploma or recognized equivalent.
Experience
One year of janitorial or building maintenance work.
License
Valid California Class C driver's license and acceptable driving record at time of hire and throughout employment.
Special Requirements
Ability to work extended hours and evening, night, or weekend shifts. May be required to return to work in emergency situations. Ability to move and lift equipment of 50 pounds or more.
Background Investigation
Candidates must demonstrate the ability to successfully complete a background investigation conducted by the Ontario Police Department.
