Brazoria County Parks Department is growing and thriving in Southeast Texas, and features 10 recreational park sites, one historic site, more than 20 boat ramp facilities and some 14 miles of public beach along the Gulf Coast. Supervisor: Parks Maintenance Mechanic Assistant will report directly to the Parks Shop Foreman, and ultimately to Parks Lead Maintenance Foreman and Parks Deputy Director.
Basic Job Description: The successful candidate for Parks Department Maintenance Mechanic Assistant will perform the following duties:
Qualifications: high school diploma or G.E.D. required; stronger consideration will be given to those with auto/engine repair certification, 3 years of auto-equipment mechanic experience, small engine repair experience, and maintenance / construction trade skills, as well as those with previous experience working with a parks, recreation, wildlife/fisheries agency or public works department.
Salary range $46,183 to $51,979 per year ($22.22 to $25 per hour), depending on qualifications and experience, plus benefits/vacation package, and is a full-time, non-supervisory, 40-hours-plus per week, position on Parks maintenance crew;
Available date: position vacant until filled.

- He / she will assist the Park Shop Foreman in the maintenance, repair and oversight of all Parks fleet vehicles, equipment, tools and materials, and help clean, maintain and organize service bay and barn storage environment. He or she will work on vehicles such as ½-ton and ¾-ton pickup trucks and SUVs, tractors / implements, small engines and equipment repair projects.
- Intermediate level of diverse mechanic skills for diagnostic and repair of gasoline and diesel engines, small engines and equipment repair is required. Basic operational knowledge of heavy equipment, power / hand tools such as tractor, backhoe, dump truck, crane truck, frontend loaders, riding lawnmowers, weed eaters, power saws, etc., is also required.
- Familiarity / basic skill in technical trades such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical, welding, lawn care, wastewater treatment, etc., are a plus.
- Position will typically involve daily shop service, and/or travel in park vehicle along with crew members to various job sites, park locations and beaches for vehicle, equipment maintenance and repairs, projects, etc.
- This position may also help manage probationer and community service workers while they are on site in the park / on the beach to assist with maintenance, repairs, trash pickup, etc.
- Employee must be willing to work non-traditional schedule such as four, 10-hour day shifts that begin at 6 a.m., with occasional evening, weekend and holiday projects, and on-call after hours as needed. Will likely work outdoors in all manner of elements and weather conditions, sometimes with tight deadlines to serve the public interest. This position will also assist with various Park special events and outreach when needed.
- All employees must comply with Brazoria County policies such as a uniform dress code, drug test and background check.
- Other duties may also be assigned by Parks Dept. senior staff.
