JOB SUMMARY:

This position is to perform a high-quality level of the visitor experience through cleaning and maintenance of the all-visitor areas. This will include assisting visitors by direct contact during the day and concentrating on floors throughout the complex after operating hours. The standard workweek is 10:00 AM 6:00 PM Thursday-Monday some overtime may be required. Work schedule may change to cover other staff vacation time, holidays or special evolutions. Will be required to work on a rotation schedule for any special BTG events.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Perform a variety of functions necessary to the daily operations:
    • Collect trash from all outside trash cans throughout the Gardens
    • Check all restrooms, stock and clean as shown on schedule and/or needed

o Unlock, clean wheelchair area and lock again at end of day

o Beginning at 5:00 PM, perform security sweep by locking down the Visitor Center and checking all buildings

o Set up wedding signs, take down after ceremony

o Vacuum outside walkway of Visitor Center as needed

Maintains buildings of BTG (which include Visitor Center, Exhibit Hall, Bathrooms, Theatre, Horticulture Offices and Building, Information Booth, Annex Storage, Olmsted house, North Walk Restrooms, Discovery Center Restrooms, Discovery Center Classroom)

  • Maintenance duties include but is not limited to:
    • Sweeping, mopping, collecting trash, dusting ceilings/walls, cleaning windows/mirrors includes interior and exterior
  • Be visible and available to assist visitors with questions and/or problems
  • Monitor all public facilities (gardens, restrooms, picnic areas, etc.) to ensure their cleanliness and presentation for the public
  • Perform event set-ups and take-downs as directed by the Facilities Manager or the Facilities Rental and Wedding Coordinator
  • Handle facility emergencies as trained by Custodial Lead.
  • Do a variety of minor tasks necessary to the days operations:
  • Performs security sweep throughout gardens reminding visitors of 6:00 p.m. closing time
  • Ensure each building is locked and security alarms are activated
  • Ensure mobility cart rental gate is locked
  • Ensure entrance gate exit arm is in down position and functional

ADDITIONAL DUTIES:

  • Assist when needed with special events, holidays and other days to back up needs of the department
  • Be watchful of equipment conditions that require immediate attention, be able to take appropriate action and contact Facilities Manager immediately.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES :

  • Ability to lift at least 60 lbs.
  • Ability to operate standard equipment used for custodial/janitorial purposes ladders, step stools, handcarts, vacuum cleaners, floor buffers, etc.
  • Ability to endure and possess sufficient physical strength to perform a variety of routine custodial/janitorial work interior and exterior

  • Detail oriented
Requirements

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

High School Diploma or GED; plus, two (2) years experience in facility maintenance work or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Continuous communication with staff, volunteers, and visitors

Occasional varied weekly schedule to assist with events and programs

Some exposure to chemicals used for cleaning and parts maintenance

Frequent carrying and lifting up to 60 lbs.

Able to work outside in summer and winter climates

Occasional reaching, stooping, bending and repetitive arm motions
