THE POSITION Below is a summary of the basic function of the position and scope of responsibilities. Under the direction of the Facilities Manager, lead and participate in a variety of custodial activities to assure buildings and adjacent grounds areas at an assigned secondary school are maintained in a clean, orderly, safe and secure condition; train and provide work direction and guidance to assigned personnel.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

The Head Custodian I classification serves as a lead at an assigned secondary school campus. Incumbents provide work direction to a smaller work crew. The Head Custodian II classification serves as a lead at a high school site. Classification duties are larger in scope, complexity, and responsibility, and incumbents provide work direction to a larger work crew. THE CANDIDATE

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Any combination of education, training and/or experience equivalent to graduation from high school (or equivalent), and two years performing custodial duties, preferably for a large organization or in an educational environment. Some experience working in a lead capacity is highly desirable. THE DETAILS

TESTING INFORMATION

The examination process may be comprised of multiple choice exam, performance assessment, computer skills exam, or any combination of assessment appropriate to determine technical ability to perform the duties listed in the job description .

Step 1: Application Screening (pass/fail) Applications will be screened for minimum qualifications.

Applications will be evaluated and ranked according to criteria that most closely meets the needs of the department, so it is essential that applicants provide as much detail as possible and answer all parts of the application, including work experience and the supplemental questionnaire. If there is a high number of qualified applicants, a comparative screening will be conducted to determine which of the applicants will be selected for invitation to the performance examination.

Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications for the position will be emailed an examination pass. Exam passes will not be sent until after the closing date for the position. A photo ID and the examination pass are required for admittance to the exam.

Step 2: Practice Written Examination (unscored), is scheduled for Tuesday, July 22nd . Applicants will review the testing process. Applicants will take a practice test which will include custodian instructions, custodian schedule, custodian tool identification, and safety. Answers to the practice exam will be reviewed together. A photo ID is required for admittance to the exam.

Step 3: Written Examination (weighted 50%), is tentatively scheduled Friday, July 25th, 2025 . Applicants will be tested on electrical work in the inspection, repair, alteration, installation and maintenance of electrical and electronic systems, circuits, wiring and equipment .Applicants must pass the written examination to advance to the qualifications appraisal interview.
A photo ID is required for admittance to the exam.

Step 4: Qualification Appraisal Interview (weighted 50%) is scheduled for Thursday, July 31st .

All applicants must achieve a passing score in each part of the examination process in order to be placed on the eligibility list.

ADDITIONAL SALARY INFORMATION

New Hires Initial Salary Placement

The District has established criteria in place that recognizes the education and experience new employees bring to their role in supporting students and the services of the District. Upon approval of the Director of Classified Human Resources, a new employee may be provided with advanced step placement up to Step 5 based on the following criteria:

  • Additional qualifying experience beyond that required for entry into the class (limited to no more than one step for each two years of experience related to the classification)
  • Additional education at the college level beyond the educational requirements established for entry into the class (limited to no more than one step for each two years of education related to the position)

All new hires placed at Step 1 of the salary schedule will advance to Step 2 after successfully completing the six-month probationary period.

Longevity increments are offered based on years of service with the District: an additional 1.20% of base salary after completing 4 years of service, 4.10% at 9 years, 7.08% at 14 years, 10.15% at 19 years, 13.31% at 24 years, 16.46% at 29 years.

Promotional and/or transfer candidates will be placed at the appropriate step in accordance with established Personnel Commission Rules & Regulations.

Education Incentives

All active, regular classified employees are eligible for an education incentive if they possess a college degree which is above and beyond the stated minimum qualifications for their classification.

AA/AS = 2.50%

BA/BS = 4.00%

MA/MS = 5.00%

Ed.D./Ph.D/JD = 6.00%

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS (Upon Offer of Employment)

  • Employment Verification: The Immigration Reform and Control Act requires that the District obtain documentation from every individual who is employed which verifies identity and authorizes his/her right to work in the United States.
  • Individuals selected for employment are required to submit to a tuberculosis risk assessment, and, if risk factors are identified, would then be required to submit to a tuberculosis examination to determine freedom from tuberculosis.
  • The District reserves the right to require a job related physical examination and satisfactory results from such an exam.
  • Fingerprinting: State law requires that all employees be fingerprinted. AB1610 prohibits employment until the Department of Justice completes its obligations regarding the arrest and conviction information, and from employing a person who has been convicted of a violent or serious felony, as defined.
  • All candidates with a conviction record for offenses other than minor traffic violations, must file a conviction record statement with their application. Such a conviction, or failure to report a record of convictions, may bar you from employment.
  • Other : Eligibles will be required to provide a current DMV report and/or proof of auto insurance to the Classified Human Resources Department before being certified for a final selection interview for positions that require the employee to drive a district vehicle and/or hold a valid California driver's license.
