Description
Located in the beautiful mountains of Southeastern Kentucky, the Eastern Kentucky Veterans Center (EKVC) is a 120-bed long-term care facility providing skilled nursing care and rehabilitation for Kentucky's veterans. Operated by the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs, EKVC was built for the sole purpose of honoring and caring for those who served our nation.
We are currently seeking a motivated and dependable Cook I to join our Dietary Services team. This position plays a key role in ensuring our Veterans receive nutritious, high-quality meals in a clean, safe, and welcoming environment.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Preparing, cooking, baking, and serving meals in accordance with planned menus and dietary requirements.
- Following recipes and portion control guidelines to ensure proper food production.
- Maintaining kitchen work areas, equipment, and utensils in a clean and sanitary condition.
- Monitoring and ensuring proper storage, handling, and disposal of food and supplies.
- Performing routine cleaning tasks such as dishwashing, sweeping, and mopping.
- Seasoning food appropriately and testing meals for taste and quality.
- Completing necessary documentation related to food usage and inventory.
- Supporting a team environment focused on consistency, efficiency, and resident satisfaction.
Skills and Expectations include but are not limited to the following:
- Experience in institutional or large-scale food preparation preferred.
- Knowledge of safe food handling practices and ability to follow dietary guidelines.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Dependable, flexible, and able to work in a fast-paced setting.
- Willingness to work as part of a collaborative, mission-driven team.

This position, in the Eastern Kentucky Veterans Center Dietary Services Department, in Perry County, KY, has an approved Locality Premium of $5.88 in compliance with 101 KAR 2:034 Section 9(1).
Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: NONE
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: One year of cooking experience in an institutional or large scale commercial setting.
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Vocational training in food service will substitute for the experience on a year-for-year basis.
