Job Description:

SUMMARY

The Food Service Assistant - Conservatory Cafe is responsible for providing excellent customer service, preparing and serving food and beverages, and maintaining a clean and organized cafe environment. As part of a new endeavor at the Conservatory, this role offers an exciting opportunity to engage with visitors while contributing to their overall experience. The incumbent is expected to exercise good judgment, independence, initiative, and professional expertise in conducting day-to-day operations. All work duties and activities must be performed in accordance with the City safety rules and operating regulations, policies and procedures as well as federal, state, and local regulations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

CUSTOMER SERVICE

  • Greet customers warmly and assist with menu selections.
  • Take orders accurately, operate the point-of-sale system, and process payments.
  • Address customer inquiries and resolve issues promptly and professionally.

FOOD AND BEVERAGE PREPARATION

  • Prepare and serve food and beverages, including specialty coffee and tea drinks.
  • Follow recipes and presentation standards to ensure quality and consistency.
  • Monitor food safety and adhere to all health and sanitation regulations.

CAFE OPERATIONS

  • Restock supplies and maintain inventory levels.
  • Assist in organizing and rotating stock to ensure freshness and compliance.
  • Clean and sanitize equipment, counters, and seating areas regularly.

TEAM COLLABORATION

  • Work closely with team members and the Supervisor to ensure smooth operations.
  • Support special events or seasonal promotions within the cafe.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS

  • Distributes mail;
  • Maintains a tidy work area;
  • Photographs Conservatory Cafe for promotional use;
  • Maintains cleanliness and organization;
  • Supports Conservatory Shop and Front Desk operations as needed;
  • Performs other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous experience in food service, hospitality, or customer service preferred but not required.

OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and/or ABILITIES

  • Spells and accurately types;
  • Communicates effectively in written and oral form;
  • Physical ability to perform assigned duties.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid Indiana Driver's License if a city vehicle is used.
