Job Summary:
The Lead Janitor is responsible for overseeing and ensuring the daily custodial operations are performed in full compliance with contract requirements at the United States Coast Guard Training Center in Yorktown, Virginia. This role involves hands-on leadership and supervision of the custodial staff to maintain cleanliness, sanitation, and a professional appearance across the facility. The Lead Janitor may also serve as the Alternate Project Manager when required.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide daily on-site supervision of custodial staff to ensure all tasks are completed to specification and in a timely manner.
Ensure compliance with all janitorial contract requirements, quality standards, and safety protocols.
Perform inspections of assigned areas and correct deficiencies as needed.
Train and mentor custodial staff in proper cleaning methods, equipment usage, and safety procedures.
Coordinate work schedules, assign tasks, and manage staffing needs, including coverage for absences.
Communicate effectively with government representatives and contractors regarding work performance and expectations.
Maintain inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment; request replenishment as needed.
Prepare reports or logs related to custodial operations, inspections, or personnel as required.
Serve as Alternate Project Manager when designated, assuming full operational oversight in the absence of the Project Manager.
Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum of five (5) years of janitorial/custodial work experience.
Minimum of three (3) consecutive years supervising a janitorial or custodial workforce.
Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate a team in a structured, compliance-driven environment.
Ability to interpret and apply custodial standards and federal facility protocols.
Proficient in verbal and written communication, with strong organizational skills.
Must be physically able to perform janitorial tasks and work in various environmental conditions.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working in a federal or military facility environment.
OSHA or other safety certifications.
Familiarity with government contracting processes and performance-based service contracts.
