SUMMARY: The job of custodian is done for maintaining attractive, sanitary and safe facilities; providing adequate arrangements for activities, meetings and events and minimizing property damage loss and liability exposure. Employee/s in this classification receives general supervision within a framework of standard policies and procedures. Employee/s in this job class exercise responsibility for the general cleanliness of assigned areas at specified sites or facilities within the Agency.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Includes the following but no limited to:

  • Performs routine janitorial and custodial functions at assigned sites
  • Empties trash and recycle containers
  • Cleans offices, public spaces, stairs, halls, restrooms, kitchens, and other rooms in the Agency facilities
  • Sweeps, mops, scrubs, waxes and polishes floors
  • Vacuums rugs and carpets and spot-cleans as needed
  • Dusts furniture, door panels, hand railings
  • Operates a variety of cleaning equipment such as vacuums, carpet cleaners, floor scrubbing and polishing machines
  • Cleans walls, windows, woodwork, white boards, hand railings, light fixtures, table tops and counters
  • Checks and refills, towels, toilet paper, soap dispensers and seat covers
  • Replaces light bulbs and fluorescent tubes
  • Sweeps and hoses concrete or blacktop, sidewalks, parkways, playground areas
  • Picks-up paper and debris; cleans walkways and entrances
  • Responds to emergency clean-ups such as spills and clogged drains
  • Makes minor repairs to buildings, equipment, furniture, plumbing and small appliances
  • Touches-up paint as needed
  • Observes and reports the need for maintenance repairs, safety/sanitary hazards to supervisor
  • Secures facilities
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Modern cleaning methods, materials tools and equipment

Safe use and operation of equipment and chemicals used in janitorial/custodial work

Care and maintenance of custodial and building equipment and tools

ABILITY TO:

Read at a level sufficient to successfully perform required duties

Understand and follow oral and written instructions

Communicate effectively both oral and written forms

Safely use and apply cleaning agents, equipment and materials

Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those in the performance of required duties

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: The Custodian does not have supervisory responsibilities over employees.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: High School or equivalent; and a minimum of one-year of successful job-related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, write and comprehend instructions and memos. Ability to write short correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
  • REASONING ABILITY: Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Must have a valid California Driver's

License. Fingerprint and Tuberculosis clearances required upon hire.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; run; squat; lift; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands over head and use arms; talk and hear.
  • Physical strength sufficient to lift and carry objects and equipment up to 50 pounds and move up to 100 pounds using a dolly or hand truck
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Exposure to detergents and cleaning chemicals

  • Clubhouses, recreation and other agency facilities may be noisy with very dynamic movement.
  • Individual is frequently exposed to natural weather conditions that may vary from extreme sun to cold, wet rainy and windy conditions.
