Organizational Overview:

The Bergen County Division of General Services is responsible for all County-owned and -leased buildings (excluding all Parks Department facilities). The Division is responsible for all improvements, maintenance and repairs, along with coordinated contracted services. All emergency repairs are responded to on a 24-hour per day, 7-day per week, 365-day per year basis. The County owns and General Services is responsible for facilities and leased properties throughout the County. In addition, General Services' staff is responsible for snow removal from walkways and parking areas connected to County-owned buildings and several leased properties.

Job Description:

This employment opportunity is to serve as the Senior Building Maintenance Worker in the Division of General Services. Under direction, takes the lead over one or more Building Maintenance Workers and performs varied, simple, routine, and moderately physically strenuous tasks involved in the cleaning and maintenance of buildings and grounds; does other related duties as required.

Job Responsibilities:

Takes the lead over other Building Maintenance Workers in the performance of their duties.

Scrubs, strips, waxes, and polishes floors using heavy (industrial type) powered scrubbers and buffers.

Vacuum cleans rugs using heavy (industrial type) vacuum cleaners.

Does the full range of cleaning duties in an assigned area (building, hospital ward, and so forth) following general instructions on the work to be done.

Moves heavy furniture and sets up tables and chairs in an auditorium or hall.

Polishes metal fixtures and trimmings.

May tend low pressure boilers used to produce hot water and heat.

Services water coolers.

Mows lawns, trims hedges, rakes and burns leaves and refuse, and trims driveway and sidewalk edges using spades and hoes.

Aids carpenters, electricians, painters, plumbers, and steamfitters and other trades persons by carrying tools and materials, placing and removing ladders, and cleaning up after work has been done.

Shovels snow from driveways and sidewalks, and spreads sand, salt, or ashes on icy surfaces to prevent slipping.

Keeps simple records.

Schedule:

Full time (40 hours/week). Monday - Friday

Overtime as needed

Education Requirements: High School Diploma

Other Requirements:

Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Fluent proficiency in English reading and writing.

Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey.
