Lead Custodian at Ruidoso High School
Position Summary:
The Lead Custodian is responsible for ensuring that the custodial team maintains a clean, safe, and well-functioning school facility. This includes overseeing daily cleaning routines, responding to emergency maintenance needs, supporting school events, and guiding custodial staff in compliance with district and safety standards.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum 3 years of custodial experience required; school setting preferred.
- Experience supervising custodial staff or leading maintenance operations.
- Proficient in safe handling of cleaning chemicals and custodial equipment.
- Strong physical condition; able to lift up to 50 lbs and perform repetitive tasks.
- Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and complete custodial schedules.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work professionally with school staff, students, and the public.
- Must pass a background check and meet all district employment requirements.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Leadership & Oversight- Assign, supervise, and inspect custodial work for quality and timeliness.
- Create daily, weekly, and seasonal cleaning and maintenance schedules.
- Train new custodians and ensure team compliance with safety procedures and district policies.
- Address performance issues professionally and document concerns when necessary.
- Other duties as assigned
- Oversee cleaning of classrooms, restrooms, hallways, cafeteria, gym, and all campus areas.
- Ensure sanitation of high-touch areas and proper use of cleaning agents.
- Monitor inventory and order cleaning supplies and equipment as needed.
- Ensure equipment is operated safely and maintained properly.
- Perform and oversee minor repairs and report major facility issues to maintenance.
- Supervise campus upkeep including walkways, grounds, and snow/ice removal.
- Identify areas requiring outside maintenance or contractor support.
- Coordinate custodial support for school events, including setup and cleanup.
- Lead response to urgent situations (e.g., spills, weather events, alarms) ensuring student and staff safety.
- Secure buildings by locking doors, setting alarms, and monitoring access points as assigned.
- Communicate effectively with administration and staff regarding custodial needs.
- Maintain professionalism when interacting with students, parents, and school visitors.
- Foster a collaborative environment and model a strong work ethic for team members.
- Primarily indoors, with occasional outdoor tasks (e.g., snow removal, groundskeeping).
- Exposure to cleaning chemicals, noise, and varying temperatures.
- Frequent walking, standing, bending, lifting (up to 50 lbs), and repetitive motion tasks.
- Occasional evening or weekend work may be required for special events.
- Use of protective equipment (gloves, eye/ear protection) required when appropriate.
Physical requirements as outlined below;
1. Sitting Tasks: Sitting is an occasional requirement 10% of the time.2. Walking Tasks: Walking is a frequent requirement up to 80%of the time.
3. Standing Tasks: S tanding is a frequent requirement up to 80% of the time.
4. Sprinting/Running Tasks: Sprinting/running is an occasional requirement, example: in case of emergency.
5. Flexibility:
a) Bending or twisting at the neck is a frequent requirement 90% of the time.
b) Bending or twisting at the trunk is a frequent requirement 90% of the time.
c) Reaching above the head is a frequent requirement 90% of the time.
d) Reaching forward is a frequent requirement 90% of the time.
e) Repeating the same hand, arm, or finger motion many times is a frequent requirement 80% of the time.
6. Use Of Arms & Hands
a) Manual dexterity is a frequent requirement 90% of the time.
b) Finger dexterity is a frequent requirement 90% of the time.
7. Lifting 10 - 25 Pounds
a) Lifting 10 - 25 pounds is a frequent requirement 75% of the time.
b) Lifting above the shoulders is a frequent requirement 75% of the time.
c) Lifting above the waist is a frequent requirement 75% of the time.
d) Lifting above the knees is a frequent requirement 75% of the time.
8. Lifting 26 - 50 Pounds
a) Lifting 26 - 50 pounds is a frequent requirement up to 60% of the time.
b) Lifting items above the shoulders is a frequent requirement up to 60% of the time.
c) Lifting items above the waist is a frequent requirement up to 60% of the time.
d) Lifting items above the knees is a frequent requirement up to 60% of the time.
9. Lifting 50 - 75 Pounds
a) Lifting over 50 pounds is an occasional requirement.
10. Pushing & Pulling
a) Pushing and pulling 75 pounds an occasional requirement up to 2% of the time.
b) Pushing and pulling 50 - 75 pounds is an occasional requirement up to 15% of the time.
c) Pushing and pulling 25 - 50 pounds is a frequent requirement up to 20% of the time.
11. Carrying Tasks:
a) Carrying of items that weigh between 25 - 50 pounds is a frequent requirement.
12. Use Of Protective Equipment:
a) Protective equipment may be required as necessary for eye, ear, hands, head, feet, and face protection.
