CLASSIFICATION: PSE

TITLE: Lead Custodian

REPORTS TO: Director of Facilities and Operations

POSITION SUMMARY:

Lead and participate in the performance of custodial and routine maintenance functions and activities; to perform general custodial functions in maintaining assigned site in a clean, safe, and secure condition, and to do other related work as required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • Prior acceptable custodial experience or in areas related to plant operations and maintenance
  • Ability to communicate with persons at all levels in the school community
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions
  • Demonstrated aptitude or competence for successful completion of the tasks assigned
  • Have and maintain a record of punctuality and good attendance
  • Ability and skill to operate mechanical equipment and tools
  • Ability to operate boilers and/or other major heating or ventilating equipment. Boiler certificate may be required.
  • Ability to lift heavy weights without bodily injury. A certificate of health may be required.
  • Ability to recognize and diagnose existing or potential mechanical, electrical, plumbing, or safety problems that may exist at the school
  • Maintain proper attire ensuring that personal appearance is neat and appropriate at all times
  • Must have ability to perform minor maintenance tasks at the school
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find acceptable and appropriate

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid First Aid/CPR card
  • Successful Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation fingerprint clearance
  • I-9 employment eligibility in compliance with the Immigrations Reform and Control Act
  • HIV/HBV training (obtain within 60 days of hire date – District provided)
  • Human Resources new hire training (obtain within 60 days of hire date – District provided)

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Methods, procedures, materials, and equipment utilized in cleaning and maintaining a variety of surfaces, equipment, and special purpose activity centers
  • Principles, methods, and procedures of organization, supervision, and employee motivation
  • Requirements for maintaining school facilities in a safe, clean, and sanitary condition
  • Safe working methods and procedure

ABILITY TO:

  • Effectively maintain work schedules and motivate custodial personnel toward the accomplishment of assigned tasks
  • Perform light to moderately heavy manual activities
  • Effectively lead custodial personnel and provide technical input into their work performance
  • Effectively and efficiently assist in the training and orientation of custodial personnel
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects required to carry out job responsibilities.

  • Exert 50 to 75 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Must have an adequate range of motion in the upper extremities.
  • Ascend and descend ladders, stairs, scaffolding, and ramps, and walk or stand for extended periods
  • Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, providing oral information, the manual dexterity to operate equipment and use hand tools, and handle and work with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job
  • Physical ability to tolerate frequent exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by weather

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Confer with the Director of Facilities and Operations relative to the maintenance, care and cleaning of school facilities
  • Regularly review and inspect site to ensure against safety hazards
  • Instruct new and substitute personnel in the performance of cleaning and facility maintenance functions
  • Assist in the planning, organization, work scheduling and leading of the custodial crew in cleaning and maintaining assigned sites
  • Review and inspect the work of custodians to ensure adherence to standards of cleanliness, sanitation, safety and to provide input into the performance evaluation of custodial personnel
  • Requisition supplies, materials and equipment to ensure that an appropriate operational inventory is maintained
  • Assist custodial personnel in resolving unusual problems and situations
  • Perform routine facility and equipment maintenance functions, including minor repair, part replacement and adjustment tasks
  • Inspect and regulate HVAC, electrical and plumbing systems to ensure adherence to operational procedures and to maximize efficiency
  • Maintain necessary reports and logs of equipment, facilities and emergency procedures
  • Prepare the building for occupancy for the next school year during the summer and other vacation breaks
  • Maintain custodial office and supply rooms in a neat, orderly and safe condition and ensure that all equipment is cleaned and properly stored at the end of each work shift
  • Lead others in the set up and removal of furniture as required for special events; distributes equipment and supplies as needed

EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS:

The position is that of lead custodian and is represented by Public School Employees of Monroe collective bargaining unit. This is a twelve (12) month position unless otherwise noted on the position-opening announcement. Salary and benefits as determined by the current collective bargaining agreement. Custodians are hired as District employees and may be transferred from one site to another, depending on District needs as determined by the District.

EVALUATION PROCEDURES

Performance shall be evaluated annually according to Board and administrative policies and procedures.
