What you will do:
Performs routine, manual tasks in the general upkeep and cleaning of Police Department facilities and grounds. This employee must exercise some independence, as the employee travels among assigned facilities to complete assigned work. Work is performed under the immediate supervision of a mid-level supervisor or the department head to which the employee is assigned. Work is evaluated for cleanliness and overall appearance of facilities and grounds, and is checked daily by visual inspection and feedback from patrons.+

Work will be 10-20 hours per week as decided between the applicant and supervisor. Hours may be worked during normal business hours or after in most circumstances.

Examples of Duties

Keeping Our Spaces Clean

  • Take pride in maintaining city facilities by dusting, mopping, vacuuming, sweeping, waxing, and buffing both indoor and outdoor floors.
  • Empty trash cans in offices, public areas, and restrooms, and properly dispose of waste in outdoor bins.
  • Keep windows and glass surfaces spotless, restock essential supplies, and ensure areas are clean and welcoming.
Handling the Little Things That Matter
  • Replace light bulbs and filters as needed to keep facilities running smoothly.
  • Notify supervisors about larger maintenance issues that require attention.
Helping Us Stay Organized
  • Assist with setting up and breaking down furniture like tables and chairs for meetings and special events.
  • Move desks, chairs, and other items to support changes within the department.
Pitching In During Events
  • Support city events by collecting trash, picking up litter, and helping with other cleanup tasks to keep everything running smoothly.
Qualifications
  • Cleaning Knowledge: Working understanding of common cleaning practices, supplies, and equipment used in facility maintenance.
  • Equipment Operation: Skill inor willingness to learnhow to operate tools such as high-speed buffers, stripping machines, and wax applicators.
  • Routine Cleaning Skills: Proficiency in basic tasks like mopping, sweeping, vacuuming, and dusting.
  • Following Instructions: Demonstrated ability to receive, understand, and follow directions from a supervisor.
  • Situational Awareness: Ability to recognize and report custodial or maintenance needs to the appropriate supervisor in a timely manner.
Minimum Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent
  • One year of experience in custodial or maintenance work
  • NC Driver's License

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Work in this class is medium work, requiring exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • This employee must have the visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work assigned.
  • Inside and outside environmental conditions.
  • Employee is subject to hazards, including mechanical equipment and household cleaning products.
