TITLE OF VACANCY: Custodian III - Itinerant (261 days)
POSITION TYPE: Service
ADMINISTRATIVE UNIT: The West Virginia Schools for the Deaf and the Blind (WVSDB)
LOCATION: Romney, West Virginia
Custodians perform cleaning and minor maintenance of assigned campus buildings/departments to ensure a state of safe and healthy operation that prevents problems and/or interruptions to the educational program. The custodian performs assigned duties and repairs and receives direct supervision from the building administrator with oversight for campus wide events or projects from the maintenance supervisor. Custodians may be assigned to complete campus laundry service tasks based on departmental needs.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Will adhere to WVBE Policy 5902 - "Employee Code of Conduct" and the applicable WVSDB personnel policies for employee performance.
Communicates in a positive, professional, and courteous manner with all students, staff or visitors.
Follows established procedures and policies in carrying out assigned duties.
Performs duties efficiently and productively.
Corrects minor safety hazards when observed and/or immediately refers major safety hazards to building supervisor.
Maintains records and makes reports on these records as requested.
Carries and operates communication devices with established notification procedures, as requested.
Attends staff meetings, as scheduled.
Keeps buildings and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas neat, clean, and free of litter at all times.
Disinfects all water fountains, floors in the restrooms, commodes, urinals, and sinks.
Washes all windows, both inside and outside.
Performs groundskeeping duties as assigned.
Maintains all floors in a clean and attractive condition, including regular waxing, and in a good state of preservation.
Secures all windows and doors, turns off all lights (except emergency lights), and arms any alarm systems at the end of each day.
Regulates heat, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to provide a temperature appropriate to the season and to ensure economical usage of fuel, water, and electricity.
Performs minor maintenance repairs. Reports any major repairs to immediate supervisor.
Moves furniture or equipment within the buildings or on campus as required for various activities and as directed by the supervisor.
Remains on the school premises during the school hours and during non-school hours when the use of the building has been authorized and his/her attendance has been required by immediate supervisor. The custodian is responsible for having the building ready for any night activities and any other activities which are regularly held at the school or assigned department.
Conducts an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep, and repair.
Performs supportive duties such as:
Displays Flag (state and country)
Flies Flag at half-staff, when authorized
Reports safety hazards within building
Stores equipment
Services carpeted areas
Maintains an inventory of supplies and equipment and informs immediate supervisor of needs in advance so as not to hinder the continued performance of the assigned duties.
As assigned by supervisor, receives soiled laundry items at the Maintenance facility and appropriately cleans, folds or presses them to be returned to the department of origin.
Maintains laundry equipment and submits any service/repair orders in a timely manner
Returns clean laundry to department within appropriate time frame
Maintains confidentiality and unquestionable integrity.
Other duties as assigned which will at times be in other campus areas than that of regularly assigned building/department.
WV Code 18A-4-8b:
Custodian III - means a person employed to keep buildings clean and free of refuse, to operate the heating or cooling systems and to make minor repairs.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School diploma or equivalent, pursuant to WV Code 18A-2-5.
- Meet the definition of "Qualifications" in WV Code 18A-4-8b. demonstrated competency, pursuant to WV Code 18A-4-8e (state-approved competency test), as required.
- Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code 18-5-15c and/or 18A-3-10, as appropriate.
- Pool Operator Certification (have or willing to acquire).
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. SALARY:
COMPENSATION:
Based on WVSDB Service Personnel Salary Schedule, C Scale. Dependent on applicable years of experience and education level. Twelve months (261-day) annual employment. Specific assignment is based upon student needs, enrollment, and departmental needs.
