Job Description
GENERAL PURPOSE
This is building custodial work at the full performance level on one of three shifts. A position in this class transports furniture and supplies, sweeps and removes debris, and checks lighting and other elements for any needed repairs. A position in this class is differentiated from those in related classes by the routine nature of the duties performed.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
This position reports directly to the Custodial Superintendent.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
This position is not responsible for the supervision of other employees or functions.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES OF THE POSITION
Performs custodial tasks, such as sweeping, vacuuming, mopping and waxing floors and cleaning bathroom fixtures and surfaces. Washes windows.
Checks for sufficient paper supplies in washrooms, adding additional supplies as needed.
Checks water cooler bottles and replaces the same.
Empties waste cans and replaces liners in County buildings and offices.
Spreads salt and removes snow from walkways.
Cleans up exterior drains of debris.
Assembles and removes furniture, bookshelves, etc., sets up chairs and tables as requested.
Unloads delivery trucks and transports supplies to receiving office.
Checks assigned space for maintenance needs. Refers more involved needs to supervisor for other action.

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE Completion of a high school, or general equivalency, diploma.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Basic knowledge of methods and techniques of building custodial work.
Ability to read directions, instructions and safety precautions pertaining to cleaning products and equipment, alarm systems and the like, and to maintain basic records of activities.
Ability to learn the specific uses of any assigned equipment and products.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to keep basic records of supplies, activities and occurrences.
Ability to respond correctly and politely to associates, other County personnel, representative of contracted organizations, and the public.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand and communicate in English to perform the duties of this position.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT
Floor buffers, steam cleaners, carpet cleaners, washers, vacuum, mops, broom, and dusting equipment.

All full-time employees and part-time employees working more than 1000 hours per year qualify for County of Northampton retirement benefits, in which employees must contribute 5% of their earnings, and employees may choose to add additional voluntary contributions, not to exceed an additional 10%. Additionally, employees may participate in an optional deferred compensation plan [457(b)] which may provide present tax advantages and future retirement savings. Such arrangements are made directly with the providers and the County will administer payroll deductions only.
