Custodian I: The Custodian I is the entry level classification in the Custodian series. This class is distinguished from the journey level by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within this series. Employees at this level are not expected to perform with the same level of judgment on matters allocated to the journey level. As experience accrues, incumbents will perform with increasing independence. Positions in this classification perform a full range of cleaning and facility preservation tasks, and also maintain required supplies and equipment. Positions in this classification frequently work alone at different City locations.
Custodian II: This is the full journey level in the Custodian series. This class is distinguished from the Custodian I by the assignment of the full range of duties and responsibilities. Employees at this level receive only general direction or assistance as new or unusual situation arise and are fully aware of operating procedures and policies within the work unit. Incumbents allocated to this job class must work independently and possess the ability to prioritize assignments in an effective and productive manner. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the entry level.

Custodian I:
Education: Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
Experience: Six (6) months of custodial experience involving the use of chemicals in the cleaning and maintenance of a building facility.
Licenses and/or Certificates Required: Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license is required. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to physical disability will be reviewed on a case-by case basis.
Custodian II:
Education: Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
Experience: Three (3) years recent, full-time experience including the use of chemicals in the cleaning and maintenance of buildings and facilities. Some experience in the Custodian I position is required.
Licenses and/or Certificates Required: Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license is required. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to physical disability will be reviewed on a case-by case basis.
