GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Under general supervision, performs manual labor in the collection of
refuse and/or recycling materials; operates
medium equipment and heavy-duty trucks including refuse packers and
recycling trucks as a relief and fill-in
driver when assigned. Work varies, limited judgement within prescribed
standards and procedures is required;
adjusts work methods to meet task requirements.
TYPICAL DUTIES:
o Performs a variety of manual labor and semi-skilled work in refuse
collection and disposal along with the
collection of recycling materials.
o Operates and maintains light and medium equipment including automated
sideload (ASL) and semi-
automated rear load refuse/recycling trucks and other trucks over 27-ton
capacity.
o Loads and hauls recycling materials and refuse on a route and for
special pick-ups.
o Makes special pick-ups for discarded furniture and other refuse.
o Keeps track of time for billing customers.
o Dumps refuse carts; lifts heavy cans of refuse; makes repairs to
refuse carts.
o Washes trucks; checks oil.
o Cleans inside of garage.
o Cleans inside of refuse containers.
o Performs minor repairs to equipment.
o Aids in emergency and storm related activities.
o Prepares minimal records of own activities; keeps track of time for
billing customers.
o Performs overtime as required and performs other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION - RESPONSIBILITY FOR WORK OF OTHERS:
May act as lead worker of seasonal employees or regular helper.
MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to the following:
o High school diploma or G.E.D.
o Two (2) years of experience in the operation of refuse packers or
medium equipment in construction,
maintenance, or related activities.
o Must possess a valid Kansas drivers license at hire.
o Must possess a Kansas Class B commercial drivers license (CDL) with
air brake endorsements or obtain
within one (1) year from the start date of employment.
The City of Salina will pay enrollment fees and pay hourly wages for
employees to attend Class B CDL training
at Salina Area Technical College.
RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS: None.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow
employees, officials and the public. (Daily)
Maintain and safely operate equipment. (Daily)
Assigned projects are performed properly and efficiently. (Daily)
Handle solid waste properly and safely. (Daily)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Work Type: Heavy, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally,
and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently,
and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Climbing/Balancing: Climb inclines, uneven surfaces, balance required.
Stand/Sit: Sit about 5 percent of the time.
Reaching: Frequent, overhead as well as horizontal.
Vision: Adequate to perform essential job functions.
Color Vision: Adequate to perform essential job functions.
Hearing: Seldom perceive nature of sounds by ear.
Speech: Seldom express ideas by means of spoken words.
Eye/Hand/Foot Coordination: Minimal , able to walk, push carts and
hydraulic controlled equipment with hand
controls and levers.
Manual Dexterity: Minimal, able to use shovels, rakes, brooms, clutch
and levers.
ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Inside/Outside: Work outside.
Cold/Heat: Adverse conditions possible.
Wet/Dry: Adverse conditions possible.
Noise/Vibrations: Heavy packer and truck noise.
Hazards: Exposure to traffic safety and dump areas.
Fumes/Dust/Odors: Exposure to yard dust, garbage odors and minimum
exposure to fumes.
Infectious Diseases: Moderate exposure.
MENTAL REQUIREMENTS OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Ability to listen and apply information and instructions.
MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT AND WORK AIDS USED:
Sanitation packer truck, lifts, shovels, rakes, brooms, power washer and
salt spreaders.
