Basic Function:
Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, perform a variety of routine grounds maintenance and gardening duties in the beautification of assigned City grounds and landscaped areas including parks, athletic fields, roadsides and golf courses.Distinguishing Characteristics:
The Parks/Golf Maintenance Worker I classification is the entry-level position in the series and performs routine grounds maintenance and gardening duties. Incumbents work under close supervision while learning job tasks. The Parks/Golf Maintenance Worker II is the journey-level class in the series, performs a broad range of duties with minimal instruction or assistance, and performs the more complex gardening and grounds maintenance activities.EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Essential Duties:
Mow, edge, trim, aerate and water lawns, fields, fairways, greens and other turf grounds; prepare and fertilize soil; water various ground areas by hand or by operating the irrigation system.
Plant, cultivate, prune, spray, fertilize, remove and irrigate flowers, trees, grass and shrubs; grind and remove tree stumps as necessary; hoe and pull weeds and rake leaves; edge walkways; sweep litter from walks and driveways.
Perform general grounds cleanup, including picking up paper and trash on ground areas, parking lots, playgrounds, athletic fields, walkways, fairways and other assigned areas; empty trash receptacles as assigned.
Operate a variety of power-driven equipment such as tractors, lift trucks, mowers, edgers, blowers, power pressure sprayers, tillers, chainsaws, grinders, aerators and other equipment used in ground maintenance work; utilize standard gardening hand tools; drive a vehicle to conduct work.
Utilize appropriate pest control methods to eradicate weeds, gophers and other pests according to established procedures; trap and dispose of rodents as necessary.
Maintain grounds maintenance equipment in safe operating condition; perform minor maintenance on equipment such as changing blades.
Assist with maintenance and repair of irrigation systems, swimming pools, park facilities, masonry, concrete, plumbing and playground equipment as assigned; remove graffiti as needed; clean and maintain restrooms as directed.
Communicate with City personnel and outside agencies to exchange information and resolve issues of maintenance, repairs, safety and other groundskeeping related issues.
Maintain routine records related to assigned activities.
Other Duties:
Assist with traffic control to ensure the safety of maintenance activities as necessary. May temporarily exercise technical or functional supervision of other full-time, part-time or volunteer workers as assigned.
TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONSKnowledge of:
- Basic grounds maintenance procedures including mowing, edging, raking and weeding.
- Methods, equipment and materials used in gardening and groundskeeping work.
- Cultivating, fertilizing, watering and spraying of flowers, trees and shrubs.
- Operation and maintenance of hand and power tools and equipment used in groundskeeping.
- Herbicides and other chemicals used in grounds maintenance.
- Methods and materials used in controlling weeds and other pests.
- Health and safety regulations.
- Proper lifting techniques.
Ability to:
- Perform a variety of routine grounds maintenance and gardening duties in the beautification of assigned City grounds and landscaped areas including parks, athletic fields, roadsides and golf courses.
- Mow, edge, water, weed, fertilize, rake and cultivate lawns, flower beds, athletic fields and other landscaped areas.
- Maintain athletic areas in a safe condition.
- Operate and maintain hand and power tools and other equipment used in grounds maintenance.
- Apply specialized chemicals to control and eradicate weeds and other pests.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Learn basic record-keeping techniques.
- Observe health and safety regulations.
- Work cooperatively with others.
- Perform heavy physical labor.
- Report to work every scheduled workday.

Any combination equivalent to sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above.

Valid California driver's license.
