JOB OPPORTUNITY The Kings County Public Works Department is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Janitor. There is one current vacancy. Future vacancies for this position may be filled from the eligible list to be established. The typical life of a list is six months.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general supervision from assigned supervisory or management personnel. Exercises no direct supervision of staff.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This is the journey-level classification in the Janitor series. Positions at this level are distinguished from the Janitor Trainee level by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned, working independently, and exercising judgment and initiative. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. This class is distinguished from the Senior Janitor in that the latter is responsible for providing technical and functional direction over lower-level staff.

DUTY SAMPLE

  • Sweeps, vacuums, mops, scrubs, waxes, and buffs floors.
  • Dusts and polishes furniture and woodwork; polishes metal work.
  • Cleans and dusts books, shelves, and office cubicles.
  • Empties, cleans, and lines waste receptacles and disposes of trash.
  • Cleans and sanitizes workstations, and public areas when an infectious/unsanitary condition is reported; washes doors, windows, baseboards, and walls.
  • Cleans and sanitizes restrooms and drinking fountains; restocks restroom supplies.
  • Cleans and sanities kitchen, break room, and conference room areas; refills containers and dispensers; wipes down countertops, tables, and chairs; scours sinks.
  • Moves and arranges furniture and equipment for special events.
  • Closes windows, turns off lights, and locks and unlocks doors to secure buildings; turns alarm systems on and off.
  • Keeps basic records of work performed, timesheets, etc.
  • Observes safe working practices, including maintaining storage areas in a safe condition.
  • Reports any safety hazards.
  • Follows label instructions to safely use chemical cleaners.
  • Uses a variety of janitorial tools, equipment and supplies; maintains equipment and materials in proper condition.
  • Changes light bulbs.
  • Attends safety trainings.
  • Assists with facility projects as required.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Education:

  • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12 th ) grade.

Experience:

  • Six (6) months of experience in janitorial or custodial work.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

Licenses:

  • Possession of a valid California driver's license issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles at the time of appointment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Qualify for security clearance through a background investigation and fingerprint check. Qualify for deputization by the Sheriff for the purpose of supervising inmate trustees. Ability to work a variety of shifts including nights and weekends.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer, and to operate a motor vehicle to visit various County sites; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. Standing in and walking between work areas is frequently required; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform medium to heavy physical work; finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate tools and equipment. Positions in this classification frequently bend, stoop, kneel, and reach to perform assigned duties, as well as push and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information; climb and descend ladders; operate varied hand and power tools and janitorial equipment. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects up to 50pounds.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Employees work in an office environment with moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions, and exposure to chemical, mechanical, and/or electrical hazards, hazardous physical substances and fumes, dust, and air contaminants, biologic/infectious agents, vermin, insects, and parasites, and excessive noise at specific County sites. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.
