Position Summary

As a Cook 1, you are responsible for the daily preparation of specials and entrees, operating kitchen equipment, keeping accurate records, and overseeing the work of Food Service Worker 2 (FSW2) staff and student employees. Under the direction of the Chef or Cook 2, you will develop the daily work plan for your assigned area. You will also monitor food safety and sanitation procedures working within a HACCP plan. Throughout the year, you will provide ongoing training to FSW2 staff and student employees, working in conjunction with other dining staff to create a trend-setting dining experience for our Ducks.

In this role, you will need strong customer service skills, as you will interact directly with students, staff, and faculty. Adhering to the Service Standards set by Housing Food Services, you will set an example for other level positions by exhibiting appropriate professional behavior and creating a respectful and inclusive work environment.

This position is a full-time, 9-month position. Shifts may include nights, weekends, and holidays and schedules may change based upon the operational needs of the unit.

Special Requirements for this role include:

Having, or the ability to obtain, a Lane Country Food Handler's card within 2 weeks of employment.

Taking and understanding Hazard Communication Training and Kitchen Safety Training supplied by the employer.

Successfully completing a cooking practical that demonstrates knife skills, various cooking methods, sanitation, plate presentation, and timing.

Work conditions and physical demands are typical of those found in the food service industry. These conditions may include slippery floors, extreme temperatures, heavy lifting, and standing for long periods.

As Essential Personnel, you must make every reasonable effort to arrive at the campus at your regularly scheduled times during inclement weather and/or university closures unless otherwise notified by your supervisor or manager. This includes times when the university may be closed, and you must provide reliable and current contact information at all times.

Minimum Requirements

One year of experience as a cook in a commercial food service facility;

OR

Possession of a Certificate of Completion in culinary arts and/or Foods and Hospitality Service from a certified community college or technical school.

Professional Competencies

Ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures.

Ability to provide excellent customer service and maintain professional demeanor during rush periods.

Ability to prioritize duties.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience preparing breakfast, lunch, and dinner in a high volume kitchen.

Experience directing the work of other staff.

Exhibition cooking experience.

Experience working within a HACCP plan.
