Job Description
The Janitor is an employee of the City of Kenai working under the direction of an assigned Facility Manager or designee. The Janitor performs a variety of routine janitorial work at assigned City buildings, including cleaning offices, restrooms, stairs, and community areas. Work is performed with minimal direct supervision, but may require contact with the public and other City employees.
- Note, this is a 14 hour a week position, working primarily at the Kenai Senior Center.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform general janitorial duties as the assigned City of Kenai facility.
- Follow weekly routine and complete checklists at end of each shift.
- Vacuum, sweep, and mop floors; operate equipment such as vacuum cleaners.
- Clean and sanitize restrooms, including floors and fixtures; refill soap, paper, and other sanitary dispensers; ensure adequate levels of restroom supplies.
- Clean and sanitize sinks, tables, and countertops.
- Empty trash cans and replace liners; clean receptacles as necessary.
- Dust and clean office desks and furniture, including chairs.
- Clean windowsills and windows.
- Maintain janitor closet(s) in a clean, organized, and safe manner.
- Monitor inventory of cleaning and sanitizing products to ensure adequate supplies on-hand at assigned building.
- Pick up and dispose of refuse as necessary.
- Consult Safety Data Sheet (SDS) and follow procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment; use personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves, masks when necessary; follow safe practices as required.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with City employees, including work collaboratively with janitorial staff.
- Assist in cleaning multiple buildings within the City.
- Ensure assigned building is adequately secured.
- Attend trainings as required.
- Maintain regular, reliable and predictable attendance at work.
- Perform tasks with minimal or no supervision.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
- The applicant (or employee after hire) must pass a background investigation, including but not limited to a criminal background check to meet requirements for using record networks and protected databases and as may be required by federal or state agencies.
- Depending on facility assigned, may be required to possess or obtain a valid CPR/First Aid certificate issued by the American Heart Association (or other approved entity) within thirty (30) days of employment.
Supplemental Information
WORKING ENVIRONMENT The work environment is typically inside and in a community room setting, adequately heated, lighted, and ventilated as well as around the outside entry ways of the assigned facility. Work is performed after normal business hours and may include contact with employees or the public as well as working alone. The employee may have to work on uneven and occasionally wet and slippery surfaces and is exposed to water and cleaning solvents. The employee may be exposed to dust and other irritants and toxic/poisonous substances. Personal protective equipment (PPE) is provided and must be used in accordance with best practices, federal and state laws, and City/Department policies and operating procedures.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, stand, bend, kneel, reach, push, pull and occasionally carry heavy items weighing up to 50 pounds. Manual dexterity, including gripping and some fine motor skills, is required to complete most tasks. The employee must occasionally exert up to 50 pounds of force.
