Position Description

Position Title: Custodian/Ground Maintenance (Part-time)

Terms of Employment: 12 Months/6 hours per day

Supervisor: Principal, Custodian Supervisor, or Designee

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

General Description

  • The school custodian plays an essential role in maintaining the building and physical plant, using approved materials and supplies to keep buildings clean, and promoting health and school pride through the keeping of a safe physical environment. Assistance with campus safety also may be necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hold a high school diploma or GED certificate.
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of custodial cleaning and grounds maintenance experience.

Essential Job Functions

  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, scrub, and refinish floors; clean, wax, dust, and polish furniture; wash windows and walls; and perform other general cleaning tasks in the assigned area.
  • Clean restrooms: scrub and disinfect toilet doors, urinals, toilet bowls, and other fixtures daily.
  • Clean drinking fountains regularly.
  • Gather and empty trash.
  • Apply cleaning chemicals according to established safety procedures.
  • Adhere to safety measures for cleaning, lifting, moving, and operating equipment.
  • Make certain all areas of the building are kept in a clean, sanitary, and orderly condition according to division standards.
  • Use universal precautions with the cleaning-up of body fluids.
  • Keep all equipment in a good state of repair and cleanliness.
  • Assist in monitoring building safety and security; lock and secure areas of responsibility when leaving.
  • Report immediately any damage to school property.
  • Provide cleaning support when events are scheduled outside of regular school hours, if such is requested by the Principal or designee.
  • Maintain the lawn and grounds; assist with inclement weather shoveling, salting, snow removal, etc., as directed.
  • Maintain inventory and request cleaning supplies and materials needed to accomplish assigned tasks.
  • Secure equipment and supplies to protect against pilferage, loss, theft, or abuse.

  • Maintain awareness of energy conservation and make suggestions to the supervisor and/or principal of methods and procedures to conserve energy.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with students, faculty, administration, and community patrons.
  • Submit all data and information as requested.
  • Monitor daily district email for pertinent communication.
  • Attend meetings as scheduled by supervisor and/or district administrators.
  • Complete requested paperwork.
  • To perform other duties as assigned by the Principal, Head Custodian, or designee.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Initiative and ability to work with minimal direction; sound judgment and decision-making capabilities are essential. Knowledge of safe handling of chemicals and other cleaning supplies. Reading comprehension skills, coordination skills, oral comprehension skills, and equipment selection skills. Ability to read and follow instructions, written and verbal. Ability to select proper tools for cleaning area(s) assigned.

Physical Demands

  • The physical demands described here represent those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee must have the ability to move heavy furniture and operate heavy equipment as well as general cleaning equipment; manual dexterity, flexibility, and strength sufficient to move, lift, and arrange items in the school building; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; to hear, understand speech, and speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly at normal levels indoors and on the telephone. Physical agility to drive, bend, stoop, sit on the floor, stand, climb, crawl, climb stairs, walk, reach overhead, be on feet, and move around for a full work shift.

Equipment Operation

  • Wet and dry vacuums, polishers, buffers, brooms, mops, ladders, mechanical lifts, lawn equipment.

Contacts

  • Contacts are made with the general public, NCPS/ANTC/ACPS employees, students, and parents.

Work Direction/Supervision

  • Day-to-day direction and supervision provided by the school principal or Designee. Operates within division and school policies and procedures, and by applying acceptable custodial standards, Labor and Industry standards, and OSHA standards.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 18 years of age.
  • References: Applicants must submit two (2) written references: one reference should be from a current or previous supervisor. Applicants may use the Nottoway County Public Schools reference form that is incorporated in the online application or a signed, dated letter of reference.
  • Successful outcomes of the following background investigations/tests are required before any offer of employment can be finalized:
    • Tuberculosis Screening/Test
    • Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Criminal History Investigation
    • State Police Criminal History Investigation
    • Child Protective Services (CPS) Investigation

Special Requirements

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of this position.
