Substitute Custodian Job Description
Position Title: Custodian
Department: Custodial
Reports To: Head Custodian, Facilities Manager
Salary Range: $20.00 an hour
Position Type: Non-Exempt
Schedule: 12 Month Employee

MAJOR FUNCTION:
Performs custodial maintenance duties including dusting, mopping, finishing and buffing floors,
vacuuming and shampooing carpets, cleaning and restocking restrooms. Will also be in charge
of minor maintenance duties including but not limited to: painting, replacing light bulbs, repairing door handles, tile work, replacing window blinds or shades, replacement of faulty restroom equipment. Use help desk type program to manage minor maintenance duties.

It is determined that to carry out the essential duties and responsibilities an individual must be able to work at a desk, conference table, or in meetings of various configurations; stand and circulate for extended periods; hear and understand speech at normal levels; see up close, at a distance, and have depth perception; communicate so others will be able to clearly understand normal conversations; bend and twist, stoop, kneel, run and crawl; reach in all directions; and lift and carry up to 75 pounds.
Essential Physical Responsibilities
- Dust and mops floors.
- Vacuums carpets.
- Cleans restrooms and restocks paper and soap supplies.
- Performs routine maintenance to custodial equipment and supplies.
- Empties trash receptacles and bags trash for proper disposal.
- May change light bulbs as directed.
- Locks doors after cleaning areas.
- Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement
of workplace safety and environmental practices.
- May oversee and/or assist with snow removal activities.
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
- Ability to read and understand an MSDS.
- Ability to understand verbal instructions.
- Ability to understand and follow safety procedures.
- Ability to operate vacuums and other related equipment.

- Ability to use hand and power tools applicable to trade.
- Ability to lift and manipulate heavy objects.
- Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
- Ability to understand written and verbal communications.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort:
- Considerable physical activity.
- Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing or pulling required of objects up to 75 pounds.
- Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of the job.
- Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
- Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
MINIMUM REQUIRED:
- Less than high school; no previous experience required.
PREFERRED:
- High school diploma or GED
- Experience
- Basic Computer knowledge
