Under general direction of the Public Works Director and/or his/her designee and within guidelines set by policies, rules, and regulations, this position is responsible for ensuring clean, orderly, and attractive conditions of City owned buildings, grounds, and associated property.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Maintenance

  • Submits requests for supplies to inventory control at Public Works as needed.
  • Maintains adequate supplies on hand and in offices; alerts inventory control at Public Works when low.
  • Maintains cleaning equipment to ensure proper care and upkeep.

General Duties

  • Ensures that City owned buildings (and their grounds) are maintained in a clean and attractive manner including, but not limited to, grounds maintenance, litter removal, building cleaning, carpet cleaning, and floor waxing.
  • Ensures supplies are available in all restrooms and break areas (i.e. soap. toilet paper, hand towels, etc.)
  • Vacuums, sweeps, mops, scrubs and/or shampoos surfaces, specifically: carpets, floors, and walls, located in hallways, stairs, office space, and restrooms; cleans spills; strips/waxes/buffs floor surfaces.
  • Cleans, dusts and polishes furniture, equipment, artwork, fixtures, surfaces, and trim; cleans blinds, windows, and air vents.
  • Cleans, deodorizes and disinfects bathrooms; maintains supply levels of paper and soap products in bathrooms.
  • Cleans and disinfects water fountains, telephones, or public facilities.
  • Cleans kitchen equipment and supplies, specifically: coffeepots, coffee machines, microwave, and refrigerators .
  • Empties trash and garbage containers and replaces trash liners; picks up/disposes of trash from ground areas; transports trash to designated trash receptacle; disposes of hazardous waste per established procedures.
  • Changes light bulbs.
  • Moves furniture.
  • Utilizes and maintains equipment, tools and supplies including but not limited to vacuum cleaners, carpet cleaners, floor buffers, mop buckets, wet vacuums, ladders, mops, brooms, and cleaning supplies.
  • Unlocks or locks buildings at the beginning or end of shift.
  • Follows daily tasks schedule to ensure adequate service is provided.
  • Conducts an inventory of cleaning supplies and requests any needed supplies as needed through inventory control at Public Works.
  • Investigates and make recommendations of new and improved cleaning products and equipment.
  • Performs other reasonably duties in a safe manner as assigned by immediate supervisor or other supervisors as required.

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent with requisite related work experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Qualifications:

  • Possession of a valid, State of Alabama drivers license to operate a motor vehicle. Requirement exists at the time of hire and as a condition of continued employment.
  • Must be insurable through the Citys insurance carrier.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of City ordinances, policies, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of cleaning materials and cleaning products.
  • Knowledge of proper building maintenance.
  • Knowledge of various designs used in setting up the Civic Center for different types of functions.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other similar programs).
  • Skill in operating various types of cleaning equipment such as electric buffers and carpet shampooers.
  • Skill in planning and organizing work for successful task accomplishment.
  • Skill in utilizing such office equipment as a calculator, typewriter, facsimile machine, and copier.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations; establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the general public.
  • Skill in verbal and written communication.
  • Skill in the use small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems.
  • Skill in using computers for data entry, word processing, and/or accounting purposes.
  • Ability to comprehend and execute written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to perform work related task above ground level and on the top of City buildings.
  • Ability to apply common sense and understanding to carry out details that do not involve verbal or written instructions.
  • Ability to read warning labels and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to read and write in English language.
  • Ability to operate, in a safe manner, power equipment used in lawn care.
  • Ability to operate equipment used to perform cleaning duties (i.e. buffers, shampooers, etc.).
  • Ability to maintain regular attendance on the job.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule.
  • Ability to organize and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationship with other employees and the public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is medium work which requires exerting up to 20-50 pounds of force occasionally,

and/or up to 10-20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:

  • Sitting: Particularly for sustained periods of time.
  • Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized
  • Handling: Picking, holding, or otherwise working, primarily with the whole hand. Must have the ability to place records, files, and boxes weighing no more than 25 pounds on shelves about head level.
  • Hearing 2: Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination in sound. Must have the ability to hear well enough to carry on a normal conversation with clients both in person and on the telephone.
  • Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
  • Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.
  • Mental Acuity: Ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.
  • Manual Dexterity: Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling. Must have the ability to efficiently operate a computer, calculator, fax, copy machine and other related office machines.
  • Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.
  • Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Visual Acuity 1: Have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; and/or extensive reading. Must have the ability to see well enough to interpret data on a computer monitor.
  • Visual Acuity 4: Have visual acuity to operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment.
  • Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another. Must have the ability to move freely about the office.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed indoors and outdoors. Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, temperature and noise extremes, bright/dim light, toxic agents, disease, pathogenic substances, animal/wildlife attacks, animal/human bites, smoke, and/or rude/hostile citizens.
