The position is 8 hours per day, 260 days per year.

This is an open examination. To be eligible for this position, applicants must be a U.S. Citizen or have a permanent resident card, All applicants must be a high school graduate or posses a G.E.D., be at least 18 years of age and have no felony convictions.

Since this position of employment is in a school setting, all applicants must be able to demonstrate that they are responsible to the community by setting an appropriate example to the students. In this regard, applicants must not have been convicted of a felony in this state or any other state, nor may they be habitual abusers of alcohol or drugs. Under the authority granted by Ohio Revised Code 3319.311, the Canton City Schools are required to do a background check to the Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation for records of employment candidates.

SUPPORT SERVICE PERSONNEL: CUSTODIAN
Days: 260 a year
Reports to: APPROPRIATE ADMINISTRATOR
Required:
1. High school diploma or equivalent
2. Civil Service eligibility
3. Physical ability to handle materials weighing up to 80 lbs.
4. Ability to work without supervision
5. Honesty
6. Ability to take directions
7. Cooperate and get along with others
8. Work as a member of a team

Desirable:
1. Possess good public relation skills
2. Possess knowledge of means, methods and materials used in performance of custodial work

GENERAL DUTIES: The responsibilities of a Custodian include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Keeps buildings and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas neat, safe and clean at all times
2. Shovels, plows and salts walks, driveways, parking areas and steps as appropriate
3. Dusts and cleans on a daily schedule
4. Sweeps and/or vacuums assigned area daily
5. Cleans corridors and steps after school each day and during the day when their condition requires it
6. Scrubs and disinfects toilet floors daily and cleans all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily
7. Keeps wastebaskets empty and clean
8. Lowers the United States Flag each school day
9. Performs such yard keeping chores as grass cutting, weed removal, tree trimming and shrubs to maintain the school grounds in a safe and attractive condition
10. Performs minor building repairs
11. Reports immediately to the Building Administrator any damage to school property
12. Reports major repairs needed promptly to the Building Administrator
13. Moves furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the Building Administrator
14 Complies with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish and waste
15. Assumes the responsibility for the closing of the building each school day and determining, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured and lights, except those left on for safety reasons, are turned off
16. Cleans chalkboards at least once a week
17. Climbs ladder to make repairs, changes lights, cleans wall and windows
18. Cleans door glass daily
19. Keeps custodian closets clean and orderly at all times
20. Performs other duties as assigned

SUBSEQUENT TO THE FILING OF THE APPLICATION, THE CANDIDATES WILL BE NOTIFIED OF THE LOCATION, DATE, AND TIME OF THE EXAMINATION.

A written examination will be administered on the following subjects: cleaning materials and procedures; safety; arithmetic; mechanical comprehension; and other related areas. A score of 70% will be the minimum passing score.

THE USE OF BATTERY POWERED, NON-PRINTING CALCULATORS DURING THE EXAMINATION WILL BE PERMITTED. YOU MUST BRING YOUR OWN CALCULATOR, BUT YOU CAN NOT USE YOUR CELL PHONE/SMART WATCH.

ADMITTANCE TO EXAMINATION IDENTIFICATION REQUIRED
Applicants who have been accepted for the examination will be admitted to the test site only upon presentation of their valid State of Ohio Drivers License or other valid photo identification card to the examiners. PERSONS UNABLE TO PRESENT POSITIVE PHOTO IDENTIFICATION WILL BE DENIED ADMITTANCE TO THE EXAMINATION.

RATING
Your name will be placed on a list of eligible candidates upon receiving a passing score. Once the list has been established, your name will remain on the list for a period of one (1) year.

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO VETERANS
As provided in ORC 124.23C, any person who has completed service in the uniformed services, who have been honorably discharged from the uniformed services or transferred to the reserve with evidence of satisfactory service, and who is an Ohio resident and any member of a reserve component of the armed forces of the United States, including the Ohio National Guard, who has completed more than 180 days of active duty service pursuant to an executive order of the President of the United States or an act of Congress of the United States may file with the director a certificate of service or honorable discharge (DD-214 Long version), and upon this filing, the person shall receive an additional credit of twenty percent (20%) of the persons total grade given in the examination in which the person receives a passing grade.
A member in good standing of a reserve component of the armed forces of the United States, including the Ohio National Guard, who successfully completes the members initial entry-level training shall receive a credit of fifteen percent (15%) of the persons total grade given in the examination in which the person receives a passing grade.

Pursuant to Civil Service Rules applicants are hereby advised that the position of employment being examined for is subject to a drug test. Accordingly, eligibility is not considered final until drug testing has been successfully completed with a negative result.
