Position Overview

The Custodian J1 ensures the cleanliness of campus buildings and some outdoor areas through standard cleaning practices such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, scrubbing, wiping, dusting, and emptying trash and recycle receptacles. This role may also involve operating equipment like pressure washers, carpet extractors, and floor machines.

The individual in this position must personally agree with Biola University's Articles of Faith and support the university's positions as outlined in its Statement of Biblical Principles and Eschatology Teaching Position. This person may not speak or act in a manner inconsistent with these positions during their employment at Biola.

Educational Requirements

A high school diploma or its equivalent is desirable.

Work Requirements

Non-exempt (02), full-time - 40 hours/week, 12 months per year

Attendance is required on Biola's campus in La Mirada, California.

Essential Duties

Emptying Trash and Recycle Receptacles: Replace liners as needed and transport waste to designated collection areas. Clean receptacles periodically.

Cleaning Floors and Carpets: Regularly vacuum carpets and periodically clean them with carpet cleaning equipment. Sweep, vacuum, and mop hard floors, with occasional scrubbing, stripping, and refinishing.

Cleaning Restrooms and Showers: Clean restrooms daily, including toilets, sinks, and all touch surfaces. Refill soap and other supplies as needed. Disinfect showers daily and perform a full clean at least twice a week.

Cleaning Kitchens and Break Rooms: Wipe down sinks, counters, faucets, and exterior surfaces of refrigerators. Empty trash, sweep, and mop floors. Clean microwaves inside and out, and spot clean cabinet faces as needed.

Cleaning Offices, Lobbies, Hallways, and Lounges: Empty trash, clean floors, spot clean glass doors, and wipe or dust common area furniture. Vacuum entrance mats.

Outdoor Areas: Sweep or blow the areas immediately outside building entrances, remove cobwebs, and clean designated outdoor areas and furnishings as appropriate.

Emergency Response: Respond promptly to clean up floods, toilet overflows, vomit, etc.

Work Orders: Record start and end times of tasks and provide simple notes on the work order. Report status to the supervisor.

Other Duties as Assigned: Assist the custodial department or other facilities and university departments as needed.

Objective Goals

Maintain assigned areas in accordance with departmental standards, working individually or as part of a team.

Maintain excellent attendance, only calling in sick when genuinely ill.

Required Skills/Qualifications

Hard Skills:

Repeated scrubbing or wiping of surfaces

Vacuuming, sweeping, and dusting

Lifting and carrying refuse, tools, and materials related to the job

Ability to push a minimum of 100 lbs.

Ability to lift a minimum of 60 lbs. off the floor and load onto an electric cart, or carry for short distances

Ability to occasionally lift, push, or carry heavier items

Ability to climb a 10-foot ladder

Ability to work an 8-hour shift on your feet

Ability to move freely with frequent reaching, bending, kneeling, and squatting

Tolerance for wearing PPE (masks, splash glasses, and nitrile or vinyl gloves) for most or all of the shift

Tolerance for standard cleaning and disinfection products

This job requires lifting, bending, walking, and standing for long periods

Soft Skills:

Other Desired Duties/Skills:

A valid driver's license with a good driving record is desirable.

Basic mechanical aptitude is a plus.

Non-Essential Duties/Skills:

Assist with training new employees and student workers when requested.

Comply with Custodial Services and Facilities Management policies.

Support Facilities Management with tasks that may fall outside typical custodial work and are not specifically listed in the job description.

Maintain general tidiness by organizing and keeping custodial closets, work areas, shop spaces, carts, and vehicles clean for yourself or others.

Engage in strategic planning by anticipating the needs or challenges of your supervisor or department.

Demonstrate resourcefulness by finding creative solutions and adapting to changing situations.

Hiring Range: $16.76 - 17.34 per hour
