Job Summary: PURPOSE OF THIS POSITION

Performs a variety of manual and skilled tasks in the general construction and maintenance of county roadways, bridges and other related facilities; operates light and medium sized equipment used in road maintenance.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE POSITION

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, communicate, reach and manipulate objects, tools or controls. The position requires mobility and many duties are physically demanding, reuniting the movement of materials weighing up to 100 lbs. Duties require regular operation of light, medium and heavy equipment and the use of hand tools, jackhammer, chain saw, shovel, etc. Activity and types of duties performed require manual coordination and dexterity.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The majority of duties take place outside of buildings with exposure to all types of weather conditions and terrains on a year-round basis; bio-hazardous waste, dirt, grease, oil, fumes, noise and chemicals. Position is subject to emergency call out after normal business hours.

REQUIREMENTS

* Possession of valid Oregon driver's license and CDL Class A with all the endorsements except hazmat. They are doubles/triples, tanks and air brakes.

* Considerable knowledge of the appropriate tools, equipment, methods, materials, and procedures used in road and bridge construction and maintenance.

* Experience in general maintenance, general road maintenance, construction work including the operation of heavy trucks and various construction related equipment.

* Considerable knowledge of the rules of safe operation of equipment and the precautions to be taken in order to avoid accidents.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

* Essential job functions are listed below but not limited to.

* Operates dump truck and pup trailer in hauling and dumping road construction materials.

* Operates tractor with belly dump, tractor with lowboy, and tractor with water tank.

* Operates water truck.

* Participates individually or as a member of a crew in patching roads with hot and cold mix; assists in chip sealing roads; performs manual tasks such as shoveling, raking, and flagging; occasionally may operate heavy equipment.

* Operates snow plows and snow blowers.

* Operates sanders.

* Assists in cleaning culverts and in constructing and maintaining bridges.

* Participates in training programs for Maintenance Worker III position.

* Assists mechanic when necessary in repair of construction equipment.

* Ability to understand oral and written instructions and act upon them accordingly.

* Safely operate construction equipment and power-driven hand tools.

* Operates heavy equipment such as a dozer, loader, backhoe, excavator, roller, or grader as trained and needed.
