Position Summary

The janitorial staff is responsible for the general maintenance, cleanliness, and disinfecting of the Care Transition Center. The janitor ensures the facility remains clean and well stocked during their shifts, making multiple rounds. Janitorial services include sweeping and mopping floors, washing walls, cleaning restrooms, staff breakrooms, patient day rooms, laundry rooms, and office space. The janitor must remove litter, smoking areas, and garbage around the facility. Janitors will be required to clean areas containing bodily fluids. Some laundry duties may be required to support patient clothing and facility linen and towels.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma preferred.
  • Experience with maintenance in a health care setting preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to multi-task, and high attention to detail.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak the English language and be able to communicate effectively with clients and staff.
  • Basic knowledge of infection prevention operations, including essential disinfection and hygiene.
  • This position requires moderate to heavy exertion regularly and will require candidates to be able to stand, reach, walk, climb stairs/ladders, kneel, crouch, and crawl.
  • Ability to lift between 50 and 100 lbs.
  • Weekends may be required according to program needs, evening or night work if needed to ensure shift coverage and on-call as needed.
  • Current CPR and first aid certificate or willingness to be trained required within the first (90) ninety days of employment.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Manages the general operating maintenance and cleaning of the buildings and grounds to maintain proper infection prevention care of Care Transition patients under the direction of the Program Manager or designee.
  • Cleans the Care Transition location before and after each patient uses the services, including mopping, disinfecting, wiping down, or hosing down furniture. This may include exposure to bodily fluids.
  • Maintain regular restroom cleaning and disinfecting many times per shift.
  • Perform laundry duties for patient personal clothing and Care Transition towels and bedding, ensuring proper temperatures and protocols are followed for sanitizing laundry.
  • Ensures walls, floor coverings, window cleaning, doors, and woodwork in the common areas of the Care Transition location are correctly maintained and cleaned.
  • With coordination of the Program Manager, reviews safety data sheets (SDS) as requested for potential exposure to hazardous chemicals used and take necessary precautions.
  • Responds appropriately to patient or staff emergencies by assisting as needed.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

The work environment is characteristic of a medical clinic environment. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; use hands to handle, or feel. The employee is also required to stand; walk; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must also possess hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the phone. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.

The employee may be in contact with individuals and families in crisis who may be ill, using substances and/or not attentive to personal health and safety for themselves or their homes. The employee may experience a number of unpleasant sensory demands associated with the client’s use of alcohol and drugs, and the lack of personal care. The employee may also be exposed to bodily fluids (blood, urine) and hazardous chemicals.
