This position helps keep the Wilmington Police Department clean, safe, and welcoming for staff, visitors, and building tenants. The person in this role is responsible for cleaning all areas of the building, keeping restrooms stocked and sanitized, locking and unlocking doors, moving supplies or furniture, running errands, and assisting with special events. This position may also take on other tasks as needed.
- Clean break rooms, kitchens, elevators, hallways, and offices by wiping down surfaces, cleaning windows, vents, desks, and equipment.
- Dust and wipe down office furniture and workspaces, including chairs, blinds, cubicles, and light fixtures.
- Empty trash bins and clean them as needed.
- Set up tables and chairs for meetings or events.
- Blow off sidewalks, patios, and entrances to keep them clean and clear
- Report any maintenance or repair needs (e.g., broken fixtures or leaks).
- Keep cleaning tools and machines in good working condition and use them safely.
- Clean and maintain floors, stairs, and entryways by sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, and buffing. This includes stripping, waxing, and shampooing carpets, for which training will be made available.
- Be available to help during emergencies or special events.
The employees are subject to working in both inside and outside environments and exposure to various hazards such as chemicals and human body fluids, and thus are subject to OSHA requirements on bloodborne pathogens. As well as being called back in after hours and reporting for inclement weather.
We're looking for someone dependable, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in a law enforcement facility. The ideal candidate takes pride in keeping spaces clean and safe and doesn't mind physical work.
Formal Education
- Work requires the ability to read and understand written instructions, understand simple processes, and operate machines routinely. The level of knowledge is equivalent to less than high school or equivalency.
Experience
One year of relevant experience. Relevant experience may include examples such as:
Professional janitorial, custodial, or housekeeping work in settings like schools, offices, hospitals, or public buildings
Experience using floor care equipment such as buffers or carpet cleaners
Certification and Other Requirements
Valid Class C Driver's License
Familiarity with proper cleaning and sanitation practices.
Ability to work independently and follow a routine cleaning schedule.
Comfortable lifting or moving furniture and supplies as needed

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Exerting 20-50 lbs. occasionally, 10-25 lbs. frequently, or up to 10 lbs. constantly.
WORKING CONDITIONS: This position has a varied work location. Physical demands include continuous standing, walking, pushing/pulling, bending and frequently performs lifting/carrying, reaching/handling, kneeling/crouching, twisting, balancing and talking.
