Position Title: Kitchen Aide

Corps/Department: Salvation Army, Older Alaskans Program

Reports To: Food Service Manager

FLSA Status : Full-Time; Non-Exempt

Scope of Position: Under the supervision of the Food Service Manager, assist in the preparation and serving planned meals for McKinnell House, Cares for Kids and the OAP nutrition services to ensure palatable, safe, and attractive meals for all consumers. Assist in the maintenance of the kitchen, equipment, and dining area in a clean, sanitary, and presentable manner to assure compliance with standard food safety and sanitation procedures and all applicable food service codes. Assist in the storage and inventory control of food and supplies.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • GED or High School diploma and at least 1 year experience working in a food service setting.
  • Ability to follow directions and work with others.
  • Current food handler’s card or the willingness and ability to obtain a food handler’s card within 30 days of placement.
  • Ability to manage time effectively.
  • Ability to operate kitchen equipment.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends, to meet demands of department.
  • Reliable means of getting to your place of work.
  • Ability to keep accurate records and reports and to communicate effectively in oral and written man.

Essential Functions:

  • Assists, as directed, in the preparation of appropriate foods, hot or cold, in a timely fashion according to pre-planned menu cycle.
  • Assist in the serving of meals and dishing of the meals on wheels containers.
  • Ensure the dining area supplies are stocked and that the beverage stations are maintained according to dietary standards.
  • Meets time frames with respect to production.
  • Gathers food items according to production sheets and begins preparing according to direction, assists as directed in preparation of salads, desserts, and sandwich items.
  • Assures all foods are stored in a safe and sanitary manner, to include dates and labeling of usable food items for future use.
  • Uses appropriate chemicals for cleaning and sanitation.
  • Washes pots and pans using the three-pot sink method. Operates commercial dishwasher in safe manner for cleaning and sanitizing dinnerware, utensils and the like.
  • As assigned, cleans, and sanitizes all equipment used daily, Keeps entire area neat and clean. Sweep and mop floors, as directed.
  • Assists, as assigned, in the receiving and storage of food and supplies.
  • Report equipment failures, breakages, or other kitchen/dining area to Food Service Manager, in a timely manner.
  • Responsible for notifying the supervisor on duty of any problems or concerns related to stock levels and food spoilage.
  • Participate and/or attend department meetings, trainings, and other functions as assigned.
  • Other related duties as assigned by the Food Service Manager and/or the Lead Cook on duty.

Work Environment: Work is performed in a heated and ventilated setting. Noise level is medium when operating motorized kitchen equipment. Occasional daily exposure to walk-in cooler and freezer during production periods and food deliveries.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, twist on an intermittent or continuous basis, to reach, handle, feel, grasp, push or pull objects.
  • Hearing and seeing corrected to normal levels required.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs., or more with assistance.
