Under general supervision, performs semi-skilled tasks for the planning and care of landscaped areas, City parks and recreational facilities and their maintenance; performs other related duties as required. Propagates seeds, plants, bulbs, cuttings, trees, turf, shrubs, and nursery stock; cares for trees, trims, braces, and prepares soil; inspects, repairs, replaces, reroutes, and operates automatic and manual irrigation systems; grades, drags, lines, and waters ball diamonds and cleans and replaces mounds and bases; lays out and maintains sports fields (i.e. baseball, softball, football, soccer, basketball, and tennis); mows, edges, sweeps, and rakes public park and recreation areas; performs minor mechanical adjustments and related maintenance on tools, equipment, vehicles, and reports the need for major repairs; performs inspections on City owned property as directed; operates a variety equipment such as mowers, chain saws, weed eaters, and pressure washers; performs maintenance and custodial duties in maintaining park structures, benches, restrooms, and other public facilities; and programs irrigation controllers. Maintains regular attendance. To quality for this classification, an individual must possess any combination of experience and education that would likely produce the required knowledge and abilities, and enable the individual to successfully perform the essential job functions of the position. Education and/or Experience:
Graduation from high school or equivalent, one year of experience in park maintenance, grounds keeping or general maintenance work; experience or knowledge of the repair and installation of manual and automatic irrigation system is desirable.
Knowledge of:
Manual and automatic irrigation systems; tools, materials and methods required for installing, maintain and repairing landscape irrigation systems; basic tools, materials, equipment and procedures used in parks and grounds maintenance work; painting and plumbing; basic principles of pruning, cultivating and maintaining trees, shrubs, flowers and turf areas; safe work practices.
Ability to:
Analyze and resolve irrigation problems in the field; perform manual labor; perform a wide variety of gardening, park, grounds and building maintenance; chalk and drag and maintain sports fields; utilize hand and power tools in performing plumbing, painting, and grounds maintenance work; repair, install and maintain sprinkler systems and make minor repairs and adjustments in assigned equipment; work effectively with minimal supervision and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others. Possession of a California Class C, driver's license is required and maintained throughout employment; California Class B license, desirable.
Physical Demands Ability to lift up to 75 pounds or more with assistance; sit, stand, squat, kneel, climb stairs, stoop, and walk for prolonged periods of time; and get from one location to another in the course of doing business. Work Environment Employee generally works outdoor. Employee may travel to different locations and may be exposed to inclement weather conditions, noise, vibration, or dust or potentially hazardous chemicals. Nosie level in the work environment is usually moderate to high and the employee may occasionally be exposed to loud talking and interruptions from telephones and/or members of the public. The nature of the work also requires incumbents to drive motorized vehicles and work in heavy vehicle traffic conditions.
