Maintenance Worker I: $43,454.35 - $55,459.98/year*. Starting salary is typically at Step 1 of the Salary Scale ($20.89/hr), but may start at Step 2 due to experience.

Senior Maintenance Worker II: $47,837.99 - $61,054.69/year*. Starting salary is typically at Step 1 of the ($23.00/hr), but may start at Step 2 due to experience.

*Additional 3% raise scheduled for July 2026.

Under the direct or general supervision of higher-level staff, performs a wide variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks related to the construction, maintenance, repair, installation and monitoring of City streets and utilities systems and infrastructure; and performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Performs street construction, maintenance, and repair activities, including mixing, raking, spreading asphalt, and operating paving machines; sealing cracks and patching streets; participating in street overlays; cleaning and sweeping City streets and alleyways; raising utilities; and construction and repair of concrete structures such as sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and driveways.
  • Performs a variety of duties related to the installation, maintenance, and repair of the water distribution and wastewater collection systems; testing, cleaning, repairing, and installing utilities systems and infrastructure.
  • Maintains, cleans, and inspects stormwater drainage structures.
  • Maintains, repairs, and installs the water distribution system.
  • Performs vegetation management activities, as needed, to eliminate hazards to vehicles and pedestrians.
  • Operates, maintains, and transports a variety of hand and power tools, vehicles, and light and heavy equipment related to assigned area, which may include jack hammer, backhoe, dump truck, loader, skid steer, street sweeper, bucket truck, grader, vacuum truck.
  • Performs proper traffic control to ensure safe conditions for the public and City workers, including installing street barricades, cones and signage prior to the performance of maintenance or repaid activities, and directing and controlling traffic around work sites.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Experience & Training

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.

A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be the following, however the below is only an example, the City will consider any related experience or transferrable skills:

Maintenance Worker: Equivalent to graduation from high school. At least one (1) year experience and/or training in the construction, maintenance and repair work relating to streets and water/sewer systems and/or wastewater collection and maintenance activities.

Senior Maintenance Worker : Equivalent to graduation from high school. Satisfactory demonstration of at least (2) years experience independently performing the duties of Maintenance Worker, and the ability to perform the specific tasks established for promotion to the position.

For this vacancy there are several levels of experience where some applicants may have complete knowledge of the below, while others may only have minimal knowledge of the below. Additionally, some applicants may lean more towards Streets while others may lean more towards Utilities in their skill sets. if in doubt, please apply anyway.

Knowledge of: Safety equipment and work practices related to the work, including excavation, trenching/shoring, and confined space entry; proper operation and maintenance of hand and power tools, vehicles and light and heavy equipment; basic methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the construction, installation, maintenance and repair of streets, water, sewer and storm drainage lines, mains and services; basic methods for removal, replacement, and application of road surfacing materials; basic methods of locating underground utility services and related notification requirements; basic principles and practices of water/wastewater systems and equipment; basic principles and practices of carpentry work; basic knowledge of plumbing and construction techniques; basic mathematical computations; techniques for dealing effectively with those contacted in the course of work, both in person and on the telephone.

Ability to : P erform construction, maintenance and repair work on streets, water distribution and wastewater collection systems, infrastructure and equipment; operate and maintain tools, vehicles, and equipment used in the construction, maintenance, repair, installation and monitoring of City streets and utilities systems and infrastructure; s et up and operate traffic area construction zones, including cones, barricades and flagging; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; read, understand and interpret written instructions; follow oral and written instructions; physically perform frequent, heavy manual labor using safe work practices; operate computer devices using standard and customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks; maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with City staff, departments, outside agencies, commercial vendors, and the general public.

Where a license is required after hire , the City will sponsor and train the selected candidate.

  • Possess a valid California Class C Drivers License.
  • Obtain a California Class B Drivers Permit within six (6) months of employment, including participating in the federally mandated drug and alcohol testing program.
  • Obtain a California Class B Driver's License (with Airbrake Endorsement) within twelve (12) months of employment, including participating in the federally mandated drug and alcohol testing program.
  • Obtain 40 hour HAZWOPER Training Certificate within eighteen (18) months of hire and maintain ongoing certificate requirements.
  • When on standby, must be ready to report to work, fit for duty, within thirty (30) minutes of notification.
  • A commitment to understand and support diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
  • Willing and available to work extended and/or varying hours as necessary, including nights, weekends, on-call and responding to emergency calls as needed.
  • Other certificates or licenses specific to functional area of assignment may be required.

Senior Maintenance Worker (in addition to the above):
  • Possess a California Class A Drivers License (with Manual Transmission and Airbrake Endorsement), including participating in the federally mandated drug and alcohol testing program.

Physical Requirements

Work is generally performed in a field environment. Must be able to perform the physical aspects of the job, including standing or performing heavy physical labor on a sustained basis; stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, reaching and twisting; pushing, pulling; lifting or carrying up to 50 pounds, and up to 150 pounds with assistance; working in cramped or confined spaces; traversing rough/uneven terrain; climbing ladders; operating a motor vehicle; working outside in all weather conditions; working around a variety of hazardous and toxic materials, including chlorine, sulfur dioxide, methane gas, gasoline, diesel fuels, and raw sewage.
