Title: Food Service Worker

Objective:

School food service workers perform a variety of duties daily. They may prepare work areas, restock service stations, prepare, and serve food and drinks, answer questions, clean tables and dining areas and take payment for cafeteria items. A few of the main duties of a food service worker are cleaning the kitchen equipment, adhering to food safety regulations, helping with meal preparation, and helping keep the kitchen / cafeteria areas clean and orderly daily.

The Food Services Worker and / or Cashier performs routine food service activities at the central kitchen or an assigned school site. Daily work is performed under close supervision.

Essential Functions:

  • Clean and sanitize work areas, tables, serving counters, tables, chairs, and food containers.
  • Perform routine cashiering duties as assigned.
  • If assigned or delegated: Receive and count money, reconcile cash and receipts and make correct changes.
  • Operate standard food service equipment such as slicers, warmers, ovens, etc.
  • Follow established health, safety, and sanitation principles applicable to food serving and kitchen maintenance.
  • Stock condiments, food items and paper goods.
  • Assist in the storage and rotation of food, leftovers, supplies in storage areas.
  • Prepare and maintain logs and records, inventory food and supplies, track food for daily production logs.
  • Maintain food service facilities, equipment, and utensils in a clean and sanitary condition, sweep and mop floors to assure a safe and sanitary work environment, wash trays, pots, pans, plates, utensils, and other serving equipment.
  • Train and provide work direction to student workers.
  • Follow George I Sanchez Charter School policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required.

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • Basic food preparation includes washing, cutting, and assembling food items and ingredients.
  • Basic kitchen utensils and equipment.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
  • Proper lifting techniques.
  • Packaging and distribution of large quantities of food.
  • Basic math and cashiering skills.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Basic record keeping and inventory.
  • Sanitation principles applicable to food serving and kitchen maintenance.
  • Quantify food preparation and handling.
  • Provide timely service of food for students and staff at an assigned school site.
  • Work cooperatively with others.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Operate cafeteria equipment and a cash register.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Patience when dealing with students of varying abilities and backgrounds.
  • Positive Attitude.
  • Team player the daily required responsibilities.
  • To demonstrate good work habits, reliability, punctuality, and follow-through on commitments.

Required Personal Skills:

  • To be punctual and be available in the school during official working hours.
  • To comply with policies, standards, rules, regulations, and procedures of the school.
  • To demonstrate timeliness and attendance for assigned responsibilities.
  • Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality.

Required Education, Certification, and Experience:

  • Any combination equivalent to: Graduation from High School.
  • Experience in food preparation, kitchen maintenance or a related field.
  • Employees must participate in available training and complete required continuing education / training hours to meet USDA professional standards.
