THIS IS AN INTERNAL POSTING FOR CURRENT CITY OF MELBOURNE EMPLOYEES ONLY

Under the supervision of the Parks Maintenance Supervisor. Performs skilled manual labor
repairing, replacing or reconstructing Park equipment and irrigation systems using a variety
of hand tools and power tools. Work is reviewed in progress and upon completion. Performs
other work tasks as required.

Examples of Duties
  • General repair of small engine and mowing equipment.
  • Perform laboring tasks requiring the use of hand and power tools and equipment.
  • Installs, repairs and troubleshoots irrigation systems.
  • Clean and maintain assigned equipment.
  • Operate City vehicle in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Deal with public complaints
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Knowledge and experience in the methods and equipment used in landscape and irrigation maintenance.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida driver's license. Applicants who possess a valid out of state license must obtain the Florida driver's license within 10 days of employment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of occupational and safety rules.
  • Knowledge of operation and routine maintenance of equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to perform strenuous work in all weather conditions.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazard conditions.
  • Knowledge in assisting on insect and weed kill control.
  • Knowledge of procedure of purchasing and follow the City guide lines.
  • Ability to operate hand and power tools.
  • Ability to read, understand, and provide feedback regarding irrigation plans.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Ability to lift loads up to 50 lbs. above the head for brief periods of time.
  • Ability to work at heights of up to 55 feet.
  • Ability to climb up and down ladders or stairs while carrying up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to identify colors.
  • Ability to drive and operate City vehicles in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions including heat, humidity, rain and cold; work around unpleasant conditions such as fumes and odors; work around excessive noise for long periods of time not to exceed eight hours consecutively; and work around dirt and dust. Such conditions may occasionally be determined as unsanitary and hazardous.
  • Ability to hear and comprehend conversation spoken at various levels and rates of speed.
  • Ability to see, read, and comprehend written communication of all sizes.
  • Ability to print and use cursive writing; write or draw letters, words, characters or symbols.
  • Ability to learn and remember simple and complex tasks and perform job requirements with limited direction.
  • Ability to walk, stand, or sit for periods of more than 30 minutes, but not for more than 8 consecutive hours.
  • Ability to walk continuously for more than 10 minutes at one time.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push or pull items which weigh up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to carry items for long distances not to exceed 300 yards.
  • Ability to lift or carry items which may be considered unwieldy and awkward to grasp.
  • Ability to hold items which weigh up to 10 lbs. for a period of time not to exceed 10 minutes.
  • Ability to push or pull items for distances not to exceed 20 feet, such distances may be level, inclining or declining.
  • Ability to bend, kneel, or squat, and move sideways while doing so, for periods of up to 10 minutes throughout the working day.
  • Ability to work in small, enclosed, or partially enclosed areas.
  • Requires the use of certain chemicals and chemical processes.
