Job Description

TITLE: Building Custodian

TYPE: Contract Per Custodian Collective Bargaining Agreement

PROPOSED SALARY: Range - Per Contract

BRIEF DESCRIPTION:

The Building Custodian is an essential member of the school staff that is charged with cleaning and maintaining the facility in a manner that ensures a sanitary, clean, attractive, and safe environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Performs janitorial work in assigned areas, entire school facility, and/or exterior of the facility with the purpose of keeping the facility neat, clean, sanitary, safe, and secure Daily/Periodic duties include but are not limited to the following:

Picking up rubbish and debris

Emptying waste baskets Recycling

Dusting visible and nonvisible surfaces

Sweep/mop all floors, walls, halls, rooms, bathrooms, etc.

Varnish, strip, wax floors/steam clean carpets when required

Vacuuming carpets Washing and disinfecting floors, walls, high traffic surfaces, toilets, stalls, sinks, tables, fountains, gym, and locker rooms

Wash windows and mirrors Replenishing supplies (tissues, paper towels, soap, etc...)

Assist with the daily operation of the schools

Prepares school grounds for staff and students

Set up for special events and activities Keep equipment and custodial facilities clean, neat and in good repair

Performs minor maintenance and repairs as needed

Groundskeeping and landscaping to maintain the school grounds in a safe, and attractive condition

Shovel, snow blow, and sand walks, driveways, parking areas, and steps, as needed

Appropriately assist in emergency situations

Cooperatively work with fellow custodians, staff, students, parents, principal, guests and with other school district employees

Friendly and helpful to visitors

Available for emergency calls and emergency work as needed

Arranges furnishings and equipment for the purpose of providing adequate preparation for meetings, classroom activities, and events

Attends in-service training (e.g., blood-borne pathogens, cleaning solvents, floor care, first aid, etc.)

Daily attendance and punctuality are required

Help respond to immediate safety and/or operational concerns (e.g., facility damage, alarms, etc.) for the purpose of taking appropriate action to resolve immediate safety issues and maintaining a functioning physical and educational environment

Inspect school district facilities for the purpose of ensuring site is suitable for safe operations, identifying and reporting any repairs that may be necessary

Ability to lift up to 35 pounds, unassisted

Ability to performs work at heights of up to 12 feet using ladders and/or scaffolding

May be required to maintain the pool and pool area and maintain a pool operators certification

May be assigned grounds maintenance including athletic fields

Secures school district facilities and grounds for the purpose of minimizing property damage, equipment loss, and potential liability to the school district

Perform other related duties, as assigned by the Superintendent of Schools, Principal and/or Director of Maintenance (or his designee)

DESIRED AND REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. High School Diploma or GED

2. Massachusetts Civil Service

ADA & MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment Including mop, buffer, snow blower, shovel, etc. Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle. Must be able to exert up to 15 pounds of force, and enough force to constantly lift up to 35 pounds, carry, push, and pull or otherwise move small and large objects. Work requires walking, standing, kneeling, and squatting to a significant degree.

Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving instructions, assignments or directions to staff, students, parents, and visitors.

Language Ability: Requires the ability to read a variety of correspondence, reports, forms, newsletters, schedules, manuals, invoices, requisitions, menus, recipes, journals, etc.

Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply principles of logical thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently.

Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.

Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using equipment

Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as office equipment and hand tools. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.

Interpersonal: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with emergency situations.

Physical Communication: Requires the ability to talk and hear: (Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words. Hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear.) Must be able to communicate via telephone or radio.
