The Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf (ENCSD) is a state school serving the 54 easternmost counties that provides a specialized learning environment for deaf and hard of hearing students, kindergarten through 12th grade, following a typical school calendar. The ENCSD offers students an academic setting with standards-based instruction, low classroom ratios, career and vocational skills development, current technology, and an overall accessible environment for learning through American Sign Language. A boarding program is available for enrolled students residing outside of Wilson County. The ENCSD seeks to promote both intentional and experiential learning to provide continued advancement in student academic achievement and social/emotional well-being.

The school has an immediate opening for Food Service Assistant. This position prepares salads, beverages, and special items for meals, and makes sure items prepared are of highest quality. This position uses designated serving utensils to correctly portion prepared items. This position serves food onto plates for student trays using portion control utensils and per menu, sets up service stations with items and supplies needed for meal service, so that service begins on schedule. This position washes dishes, utensils, pots, and pans, cleans, and sanitizes equipment and work area used and performs other cleaning tasks. A qualified candidate uses accepted and established food handling, food storage, and sanitation techniques and meets productivity standards when completing job tasks.

This is a 10-month position that works the first shift but will need to be flexible dependent upon operational need.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Provides accurate weight and measurements of food and properly uses utensils for serving portions.

Maintains high standards of sanitation and personal cleanliness.

Support the Dietary Team by reading, writing, interpreting and following oral and written instructions.

Performs moderately to heavy physical labor and remaining in a standing position for long periods of time monitoring the cooking of food.

Demonstrates the accepted and established food handling, food storage, and sanitation techniques.

Management Preference:

Prior work history in a school cafeteria and kitchen and knowledge of communicating with others who use American Sign Language.
