Serves as crew leader and performs skilled manual labor in various duties such as cleaning ditches and placing sideline and cross line pipe related to work requests and/or ditching activities and operations. Operates medium and heavy equipment such as motor grader, backhoe, front-end loader, and belt loader in maintaining earth shoulders, roadside ditches, and outfall ditches to provide the proper drainage of roadway surfaces. Assists in devising a schedule for work to be performed by maintenance crew. Quantifies daily records of work performed and materials used, records such as HMMS and the maintenance requests and complaints forms. Instructs crew members daily in safety practices such as flagging operations, wearing of safety equipment, vehicle safety, or job site hazards. Coordinates placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone according to SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual Field Guide. Operates tandem and single-axle dump trucks with trailers, and lowboy truck tractor for hauling materials and transporting equipment for maintenance and construction operations. Conducts safety inspection on all assigned vehicles and equipment. Monitors the preventative maintenance program of equipment to ensure a routine maintenance schedule is followed and to monitor equipment use and wear to prolong life. Operates both portable tank-mounted salt brine anti-icing equipment and standard dump truck with snow plow attachment and sand spreader to remove snow and ice from highways and bridges. Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations as requested or assigned by supervisor including after-hour work, and assisting on-call personnel. Performs other related duties as assigned by supervisor.
Two (2) years of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operators license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
