Work Schedule: Full-time, 12-month position
Job Summary: The Custodial Coordinator / General Maintenance Technician plays a critical role in ensuring the cleanliness, safety, and operational efficiency of all school district facilities. This position is responsible for coordinating the custodial staff to maintain high standards of cleanliness across the district, while also performing a wide range of general maintenance duties to ensure the proper functioning and upkeep of buildings and grounds. The ideal candidate will be a proactive, detail-oriented individual with strong leadership skills and a diverse set of practical maintenance abilities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Custodial Coordinator Responsibilities (Approx. 70% of time):
- Staff Supervision & Coordination:
- Oversee, train, and provide guidance to custodial staff across the district's various facilities.
- Develop and implement efficient cleaning schedules and routines for all district buildings.
- Conduct regular inspections of facilities to ensure cleanliness standards are met and maintained.
- Address and resolve custodial issues, concerns, and performance as needed.
- Approve time-off requests and manage daily custodial assignments in collaboration with school principals or designated staff.
- Assist with the interviewing, hiring, and performance evaluations of custodial personnel.
- Foster a positive and productive work environment for the custodial team.
- Inventory & Supply Management:
- Manage inventory of cleaning supplies, equipment, and materials.
- Order and distribute supplies efficiently, ensuring adequate stock levels and cost-effectiveness.
- Maintain records of supplies ordered and distributed.
- Training & Safety:
- Provide ongoing training to custodial staff on proper cleaning techniques, use of equipment, safety procedures, and handling of chemicals.
- Ensure compliance with all safety regulations, including OSHA standards, regarding cleaning chemicals and equipment.
- Develop and enforce district cleaning protocols and standards.
General Maintenance Technician Responsibilities (Approx. 30% of time):
- Building Maintenance:
- Perform routine and preventative maintenance tasks on school district buildings and properties.
- Conduct minor repairs and maintenance on plumbing fixtures (e.g., unclogging drains, repairing leaks), electrical systems (e.g., replacing light fixtures, switches, outlets – within scope of non-licensed work ), and HVAC systems (e.g., changing filters, basic troubleshooting).
- Repair or replace doors, windows, locks, hinges, and other building hardware.
- Perform basic carpentry tasks such as repairing walls, floors, ceilings, and furniture.
- Conduct painting, patching, and minor drywall repairs.
- Inspect facilities regularly for potential hazards or maintenance needs and report significant issues to the Director of Maintenance.
- Grounds Maintenance:
- Assist with groundskeeping duties as needed, including minor landscaping, debris removal, and ensuring safe pathways.
- Perform snow removal and ice treatment during winter months.
- Equipment Operation & Repair:
- Operate and maintain a variety of tools and equipment safely and effectively, including hand tools, power tools, ladders, and various maintenance machinery.
- Emergency Response:
- Respond to emergency maintenance requests during and outside of regular work hours as needed (e.g., burst pipes, power outages, security issues).
- Record Keeping:
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance performed, materials used, and time spent on tasks.
- Utilize a work order system to track requests and complete assignments efficiently.
Qualifications:
- Education: High School Diploma or GED required. Vocational training or trade school certification in a relevant field (e.g., HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry) is highly preferred.
- Experience: Minimum of (3) years of experience in custodial services, including supervisory or lead experience, AND (3) years of experience in general building maintenance. Experience in a school or institutional setting is a significant plus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Thorough knowledge of custodial best practices, cleaning chemicals, and equipment.
- Proficiency in general maintenance tasks including basic plumbing, electrical (non-licensed), carpentry, painting, and general repairs.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals is a plus.
- Strong leadership, organizational, and time management skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively interact with staff, students, and the public.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks effectively.
- Basic computer skills for work order systems and communication.
- Knowledge of safety regulations and procedures, including OSHA.
- Certifications/Licenses:
- Valid Driver's License and a clean driving record required.
