CUSTODIAN I. PURPOSE: The purpose of this document is to list a limited number of duties typically performed by a person in the classification cited above as well as certain requirements necessary to perform these duties. It is not intended to be a complete list of duties or requirements, but rather examples by which to select and compensate employees in a fair and reasonable manner. II. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: A. Sweeps, mops, scrubs, and waxes floors; vacuums carpet B. Dusts, waxes, washes and polishes furniture and woodwork. C. Cleans chalk and white boards, trays and erasers. D. Moves and arranges furniture and equipment. E. Cleans restrooms. F. Empties and cleans pencil sharpeners, wastebaskets, and trash receptacles (including disposing of infectious biohazard waste). G. Notifies supervisor of major maintenance and repair needs. H. Makes minor electrical, mechanical and plumbing repairs. I. Prepares multi-purpose room for special events or meetings. J. Waters and maintains lawns, flowers, shrubs; repairs sprinkler systems K. Performs minor painting and patching of surfaces. L. Washes windows. M. Replaces light bulbs, air conditioning filters. N. Delivers various items (i.e. supplies, mail, packages, and furniture) to the appropriate parties. O. Secures facilities and grounds (i.e. arming security systems, securing locks) P. Operates a motor vehicle as required. Q. Performs other related duties as assigned. III. QUALIFICATIONS: A. Knowledge 1. Modern cleaning methods (i.e. mixing cleaning solutions), materials and equipment (i.e. gas powered weed eaters, blowers etc.) used in custodial work. 2. Basic principles related to motor performance, electricity, plumbing and water systems 3. Safety techniques and regulations. B. Skills 1. Operates floor vacuums, buffers, shampoo machines effectively. 2. Operates and repairs garden tools effectively 3. Has a valid California Drivers License 4. Ability to use power tools (i.e. drills, saws) 5. Capacity to work cooperatively with other employees and students. 6. Ability to read and understand the English language. 7. Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records. C. Education 1. High School Diploma or Equivalent. 2. First Aide Certificate IV. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: A. Stand and walk for extenuated periods of time. B. See and read printed material with or without vision aids. C. Hear and understand speech at normal levels with or without hearing aids. D. Speak so that others may understand at normal levels. E. Sit, bend over, crawl, climb, stoop, grasp, reach overhead, twist, kneel, balance, push, pull and move, lift and/or carry 0-60 pounds to various height. V. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Employees in this position will be required to work indoors in a maintenance/workshop/classroom environment; work with and around standard hand, power, cleaning and ground maintenance equipment/machinery; contact with potentially hazardous material; work outdoors in varying degrees of temperature; and come in direct contact with staff, students and the public. 2/16/06
