Job Title: Parks-Maintenance Worker I FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Reports to: Parks & Recreation Manager

Position Type: Safety Sensitive

JOB SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Parks & Recreation Manager, the Parks-Maintenance Worker I position will perform general maintenance, repairs, and installations at City parks, medians, Right-of-Way areas, athletic fields, and municipal facilities. These responsibilities will require outdoor and indoor assignments assigned to the Parks and Recreation Department.

SUPERVISION

RECEIVES direct supervision from the Parks & Recreation Manager.

EXERCISES no supervision.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Parks

Maintains, installs, and replaces landscaping in City parks, Right-of-Way areas, medians, and municipal facilities.

Cleans worksites and restores landscaping to original condition upon completion of maintenance work.

Applies pesticides and herbicides to medians, parks, and recreation areas to control weeds.

Mows grass, trims trees, and pulls weeds in City owned areas.

Water grounds.

Remove trash and debris. Regularly trim trees and occasional tree removal.

2. Park Buildings and Facilities

Assist in setting up forms and pouring and finishing concrete.

Install, paint, repair, and maintain equipment, furniture, facilities, and playground components.

Install signs, irrigation components, and electrical fixtures.

Perform basic repairs to carpentry, plumbing, and electrical components

Clean and maintain comfort stations and other park buildings

Scrape old paint and repaint facilities as needed.

Paint and repair fences, materials, and equipment as necessary.

3. Athletic Fields

Maintain athletic fields, levels ground, and monitors grounds for safety hazards.

Mow, trim, hand rake and grade athletic fields.

Water and fertilize as necessary.

Keep fields free of obstructions and debris.

Perform seasonal overseeding

4. Safety/Equipment Maintenance

Clean mowers and perform preventative maintenance and equipment maintenance on all equipment and materials being used.

Maintain safety regulations including wearing appropriate clothing, erecting proper barricades and signage.

Inspect, clean, and maintain equipment and tools used to ensure they are in safe operating order.

Perform basic repairs to equipment

Perform routine inspections of assigned areas to detect any necessary repairs or hazardous conditions.

Utilize proper safety precautions related to all work performed.

5. Other Duties

May be required to assist in the setup, teardown, and cleanup for special events and meetings.

May occasionally be required to work on-call, evenings, or weekends.

Assist in other departmental operations when needed.

Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work hours is essential.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training and Experience Guidelines:

A High School diploma or equivalent is required.

Knowledge of:

Park and Recreation facility maintenance, repair, and construction methods and practices.

General maintenance and repair techniques for common tools and equipment used in general construction and maintenance work; and their basic safety precautions and procedures.

Operation and maintenance of assigned light equipment, power, and hand tools.

Safe handling techniques of hazardous chemicals and materials.

Mechanical principles

Landscape and groundskeeping principles

Safe and efficient operation of various types of vehicles including a backhoe, lawn maintenance equipment and tools associated with building maintenance and care of parks athletic fields.

English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

City policies and procedures.

Skills and Abilities:

Following oral and written communications and directions.

Planning and organizing materials necessary to complete work orders and daily assignments.

Operating assigned equipment, tools, and vehicles.

Resolving customer complaints and concerns.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Follow City policies and procedures.

Be punctual and regular in attendance.

LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS

Valid Class C Texas Driver's License is required.

Pesticide applicator license is preferred, but not required.

May require higher driver's license classification after employment at the City's expense.

May be required to obtain certification or licensure specific to area of assignment after date of employment at the City's expense.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS / ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS AND CONDITIONS

Work is performed in a construction site/outdoor environment.

May be subject to walking on uneven or unstable terrain.

May be subject to repetitive motion and heavy manual labor such as painting, digging, building concrete forms, transporting, delivering, and pickup up trash containers and recyclables.

May be subject to extended periods of sitting, standing, bending, reaching, kneeling, entering closed spaces, climbing ladders, and lifting.

May be subject to occasional carrying, bending, reaching, kneeling, pulling, and crouching.

May be exposed to moving traffic, extreme weather conditions, hazardous chemicals, fumes, heights, confined spaces, trenches, air, and water borne pathogens, body fluids, infectious diseases, rodents, and insects.

Must be able to lift to 85 pounds.
