The Maryland National Capital Park & Planning Commission is an award-winning organization with over 5,000 employees that administers over 52,000 acres of stream valley parks, large regional parks, neighborhood parks and park-school recreation areas throughout Montgomery and Prince Georges counties. In Prince Georges County, we are also responsible for developing the Countys public recreation programs.

Subsequently, the Department of Parks & Recreation has overall responsibility for planning, supervising and coordinating all park/recreation facilities and services throughout Prince Georges County. The Facility Services Division (FSD) is the largest Division within this Department and is composed of six major work areas: Fleet Management, Buildings & Structures (Trade Shops), Horticulture & Forestry, Major Maintenance & Inspection, Critical Projects (Aquatics, Heavy Equipment/Roads and Grounds/Trails, Sustainability and ADA) and the Administration section. The mission of FSD is to provide professional, high-quality maintenance and maintenance support services for all parks and recreation facilities and to support the diverse work programs of the Parks & Recreation Department in Prince Georges County and its customers.

This position is located in the Northern Area Landscape section of the Horticulture & Forestry group in the Facility Services Division. The position will work under general supervision, performing basic gardening and landscaping work in the care and maintenance of Commission parks, public gardens and/or landscape areas of Commission buildings and facilities. The successful candidate will assist the landscaping crews with a full range of gardening and ground maintenance duties, as assigned. The successful candidate will have a general knowledge base of the typical horticulture material used in this region, including the ability to I.D. plants (common names), shrubs and trees commonly used in the landscape beds. They will also have some experience with turf maintenance, including mowing and laying sod.

Examples of Important Duties :

  • Operates various pieces of equipment to perform routine park/general maintenance tasks

  • Landscape bed maintenance, including weeding, fertilizing, watering, raking and adding mulch. Will use and operate a variety of hand and power tools associated with the landscaping industry.

  • Prune, plant and transplant trees, as directed.

  • Mow fine turf; from time to time, remove and relay sod.

  • Under supervision, apply pesticides and fertilizers. Should be able to calculate the appropriate rates of pesticides and fertilizers. Record and maintain records of pesticides and fertilizers used.

  • Operate mowers, and tractors with attachments to rough of fine cut fields, trails or roadsides and commonly used hand tools.

  • Assist with the installation of hardscape structures walls, steps, paths, fountains, etc.

  • Operate snow throwers and shovels to remove snow from sidewalks and driveways.

SALARY $38,083 - $67,448
  1. Pass Commission medical examination.
  2. 18 years of age.
  3. Two (2) years of experience in groundskeeping, building maintenance or park maintenance, semi-skilled trade work (HVACR, plumbing, painting, masonry, electrical, carpentry).
  4. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total two (2) years.
  5. Valid driver's license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver's license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee's ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required of their position.
