Seattle Public Utilities is seeking an outdoor construction professional to serve as a Senior Forest Maintenance Worker who can thrive in a dynamic work environment while maintaining and improving our stewardship of the natural resources that enhance our City, local community, and the region. Senior Forest Maintenance Workers are an integral part of Watershed Operations and the Watershed Management Division. A team that traverses some of the most beautiful valleys, ridges, and summits within the Cascade Mountains as they conduct work on the Cedar River and South Fork Tolt Watersheds that are the source of drinking water for 1.6 million customers.

The Senior Forest Maintenance Worker position is part of an inclusive outdoor-minded crew that provides watershed maintenance on more than 100,000 acres of forest land. Priority work includes leading 2-3 person crew in the following areas: Road Maintenance, Decommissioning, Road Improvement, timber falling, fence line maintenance, fish passage projects, peak-flow projects, bridge maintenance, culvert maintenance and much more!

  • Assigns work tasks on major and minor maintenance such as fence repair, culvert maintenance and inspection, road clearing, etc.
  • Takes lead role in documentation and inspection of watershed assets, prepares necessary reports.
  • Builds, maintains, and repairs wooden, steel, and concrete bridges, walks, ramps, posts, roads, culverts, fences, gates, walls, footings, and related facilities and structures in the watershed.
  • Clears forest area of brush and fallen timber by use of brush saws, chain saws and other tools.
  • Performs reforestation, stream restoration, and habitat improvement activities.
  • Builds roads and trails, fells trees and snags, removes debris from reservoirs, hauls and delivers materials used in road construction.
  • Works closely with heavy equipment operators as a ground person, guiding excavation, preparing footings and foundations.
  • Operates hydroseeders, straw blowers and installs erosion control BMP's.
  • Emergency response to protect critical watershed and water system assets.
  • Supports major City of Seattle projects within the Municipal Watersheds.
  • Other duties as assigned including, but not limited to mowing, weeding, building, grounds and other facility maintenance.
  • Performs fire suppression duties, including laying hoses, operating pumps and other related firefighting equipment.

Experience:

  • Three years of forest maintenance, forestry, road construction and maintenance, grounds maintenance, logging or closely related outdoor maintenance work.
  • Other combinations of education and experience will be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability.

License, Certification and Other Requirements:

  • Current State of Washington driver's license.

Working Environment/Physical Demands:

  • Required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time.
  • Frequently required to lift moderately heavy objects, up to 50 pounds.
  • Required to work outdoors in all types of weather and terrain.
  • The duty station for this position is in North Bend, WA, 32 miles East of Seattle.
  • Ability to obtain Washington State Class A Commercial Driver's License with tanker endorsement and air brake restrictions removed within one year.
  • Reporting for work during winter storm conditions is expected.

Workplace Environment: Employees will be required to come into the office five days a week. Individual schedules will be agreed upon by the employee and their supervisor. The full salary range for this position is $43.81 - $47.30 per hour.
